Kimbo: a Work in Progress

Kimbo defeated James Thompson in the third round (by controversy). Thomposn was agitated that the fight was stopped but in fairness to the referee Thompson's ear was split in two and the referees job is to protect the fighters. Besides I am sure CBS executives had a little chit chat with the referees telling them not to let things go too far. I mean kids could be watching.

Kimbo showed heart but that heart was green, very green. He was taken down at will, often by a simple shoot and double leg takedown. Kimbo found himself in a myriad of submission attempts (had he fought against a legit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter Kimbo would of been in serious trouble). His size and strength allowed him to escape. Twice Thompson had Kimbo in crucifix mounts. But hand it to Kimbo he did escape the submissions and he looked decent during the wrestling. Thompson probably won the first and second round.

Kimbo shined any time punches were exchanged and it was there he did most of his damage and ultimately finished the fight. Kimbo also gassed in the second round after brief Grecco-Roman wrestling with Thompson. Kimbo kept leaving his head exposed perhaps as a sacrificial lamb to Reality Kings since he couldn't wear their logo.

During the post-fight conference though Brett Rogers (who KO'd his opponent in the first round) referred to Kimbo's fighting style as 'garbage' and insinuated that Kimbo was 'garbage' as well (though not as subtle or with as big of words). Rogers even brought up a 'phantom tap' that some thought happened at the end of round two. A melee of activity ensued with both fighters calling each other out. Eventually order was resumed. And EliteXC may of found their next opponent for Kimbo Slice.

Overall EliteXC is happy but not thrilled, their meal tickets in Carano and Kimbo won and no one died. But Carano came in over weight and Kimbo's fight wasn't the red carpet affair they had hoped. Plus there was some spotty officiating that has everyone screaming fix! We will have to wait and see what the ratings were like before a final verdict may be submitted.
