The Dark Weekend

A lot of chatter is taking place this week over which mixed marital arts event you will watch. Some say they will Tivo or DVR the free UFC event and watch the Affliction event live. Others would rather scrounge the internet for Affliction fight clips and watch the UFC event in the comfort of their own home. But this debate is missing one crucial cultural event that is occurring this weekend, the premiere of The Dark Knight.

Mixed martial arts critical viewing audience is the 18-35 male demographic, the same demographic that is keeling over in anticipation for this film. Granted a film is a lot different than a sporting event, especially when true MMA fans will place higher importance on the fights than a movie that can be seen any time. But the Dark Knight will most likely gross over a $100 million this weekend. And some of those show times are on Saturday night inevitably cutting into the viewing audience for both Banned and Silva vs. Irvin.

While the Affliction card has always been a hardcore fans' wet dream Affliction's expectations of pay per view buys indicate they hope the casual fans will tune in. A reality that may not occur due to the Joker's menacing laugh.

In essence both of the UFC and Affliction are going up against the ultimate fan boy event this weekend and if numbers are down it may not be from an audience split in half but in fact split in thirds.
