The Day after Yesterday (this guy won?)

First off let me start by saying I am still on vacation and part of the reason vacation was picked for the Fourth of July weekend was to be able and enjoy my favorite sport on west cost time with west coast friends and RELAX.

Unfortunately the predictable fight card I thought was going to occur did not happen at all. The main event between Champion Quinton Jackson and Forrest Griffin turned out to be epic and controversial. Regrettably I have little time to blog and analyze so I decided to voice some thoughts before returning to a more full time blogging schedule on Wednesday.

First off, in the spirit of full disclosure, let me come clean. I am a huge Rampage Jackson fan and was cheering for him emphatically on Saturday night. That is not to say I hate Forrest Griffin or want him to die a slow painful death similar to Derek Jeter or any of the New York Yankees and Duke Blue Devils. But rather Rampage is one of my favorite fighters and for him to lose so painfully is kind of hard to get my head around. A lot of people are throwing around the word 'conspiracy' (I did quasi-mockingly right after the fight) but this is not the case.

The fight was close with rounds being extremely close then one sided. The simplest conclusion from the fight is that it was virtually a tie. However the scoring did not reflect how close this fight actually was. So what reasonable conclusion may be made from this event? The scoring system needs to be refined considerably.

What fuels the conspiracy talk is how the press and spectators were viewing the action versus the judges. For the score cards to be so lopsided and unanimous in Griffin's favor gave many pause. Coupled with the fact that now the UFC can legitimately give their biggest draw (and Dana White's best bud) Chuck Liddell another title shot.

These two facts give rise to the conspiracy talk. Well the UFC can rectify it pretty simply. Have a rematch between Forrest and Rampage. After the current press and the nail-biting action during the past fight the UFC may of found the marketing boon TUF-7 failed to create.
