Rampage post breakdown
Major props to Josh Gross over at sportsillustrated.com for getting the first bit of news about Rampage's mental collapse following his loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86.
Basically Jackson went through a major mental, emotional and physical breakdown following his loss. The most telling quote describes Jackson's state
"Mentally he wasn't there," said the source. "It was almost as if he was possessed. He heard voices. He thought he was a God."
Now believing you are a diety is understandable, I often compare myself to Hermes and Mercury (wait isn't that the same god?) But further revelations about Jackson's mental status and how it reflects upon his born-again fundamental Christian faith appear at the end of the piece.
Jackson defeated Chuck Liddell for a second time May of last year.
The victory, Rampage would tell me in a rambling late-night call from Ireland a month later, was already decided.
"Ya'll don't see how it was just perfect timing?" he asked. "Ya'll don't see that it was written? Ya'll can't see that that was planned? That that was destiny? Ya'll don't see that cause ya'll don't have the eyes that I have. You don't know what God stored in me. I'm God's street soldier. No matter what happens I will always be God's street soldier, and I always know he's going to take care of me. And everything's going to be OK."
Now this is kind of Left Behind scary shit that is unsettling. But in all seriousness I am an extremely big fan of Quinton Jackson and am very concerned for his long term health and stability. Hopefully he will take a significant hiatus and come back clear and focused. The UFC, Zuffa and the MMA community should rally behind him to ensure a speedy recovery.
