Remember on
Friday when I said the only way Rashad Evans would win would be a boring fight that went to decision, well I was wrong. Evans viciously KO'd Chuck Liddell in the second round to score a stunning upset victory.
The first round of the fight was painfully slow with very little action. Both fighters were trying to counter box and back away. In the second round the fight really picked up. Chuck Liddell looked frustrated and pushed forward as Rashad Evans continued to move backward. Once cornered Liddell and Evans exchanged combinations then Rashad would circle out forcing Liddell to pursue.
In the flurry of punches Rashad was cool, confident while letting crisp counter punches fly. Rashad relied upon his left jab which definitely bothered Liddell as a small cut formed on his face. That same left jab set up a mean right hook that knocked out Liddell who was caught flat footed throwing an uppercut at distance. It was lights out at that point.
The aftermath of the fight is still settling in this Sunday. The UFC desired Liddell to win to set up a December fight with current light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin. People (and I include me) were so confident this was going to occur that Liddell's own sponsor prematurely released information of a contest to get tickets to said event. I and others didn't feel that
defeating Rashad Evans entitles someone to a title shot. But defeating Chuck Liddell and laying to waste the best laid plans of mice and men does. The
Junkie is reporting that Rashad Evans will fight Forrest Griffin for the light heavyweight title in December.
