Of Course there is Media Bias

The Nick Diaz Josh Neer fight brought out some interesting complaints about the UFC announcing duo of Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg. One of the charges being thrown around is ‘media bias’. These two words get throw around a lot nowadays. For instance, Fox News is biased because they accuse Barack Obama of being a Muslim terrorist, or MSNBC hired a lesbian so they must be part of some Hollywood liberal agenda. In sports though media bias is a whole other animal.

Usually sports media bias revolves around that famous ‘east coast bias’, it is where the major media outlets are located. For ESPN, the self-proclaimed World Wide Leader, it means talking up spelling bees, poker and any other shitty thing you show on your network as the greatest event ever (No One Likes Yankee Stadium so stop saying goodbye to it like it is the fucking acropolis!).

The sports world is filled with another bias, wealth. Money does make the world go round, and don’t say love unless you mean love of money. Sports leagues want events to occur that benefit their sport financially. Do you honestly think that David Stern wasn’t salivating at the bit for the Lakers Celtics final this year? Roger Goddell must have creamed his pants when the Giants decided to play his starters for the last game of the season against the Patriots, which convienttly was on NFL network. The NHL was praying for the Ovechikn Crosby match up in round one of the playoffs last year. Major League Baseball will be hoping for the Red Sox – Cubs World Series if they want to break their mediocre playoff ratings. The UFC and MMA are no different.

When Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg are fawning over a fighter to the point where you think that they are both freshmen girls begging for the star quarterback’s attention we shouldn’t be surprised. Josh Neer is a decent fighter, but he isn’t the 23-year-old blue chip prospect that Nate Diaz is. Not to mention that fact that Diaz won TUF-5 essentially making him that years’ number one draft pick. It reminds me a lot of John Madden or Phil Simms two of the worse color commentators on the face of the planet. Their ability to suck the dick of some star player or coach even when they are single handily fucking everything up is remarkable. So don’t be surprise when the commentators talk up the fighter whose victory is in the best financial interest of the UFC. Just smile and think of that fighter whom Joe Rogan and Goldie talked up only to get knocked the fuck out.
