EliteXC was the one major organization that gave real opportunity to female fighters. Now that EliteXC has folded is their any hope for female MMA? The UFC is out of the question, Dana White is
on record numerous times saying that he doesn't want female fighters in the UFC. With the WEC being owned by Zuffa, it is safe to assume that women won't be appearing on their shows as well.
That leaves Strikeforce and Affliction as the only major U.S. promotions that may take on female fighters. But if these organizations are unwilling to go after the free agents where does that leave women in MMA? Women have come a long way from being considered a side show, to legitimate fighters. Yet if female fighters are unable to find a national promotion then it will show there is still a long way to go for equality.
Gina Carano is clearly the crown jewel of female MMA right now. Popular in MMA and outside of it, thanks to American Gladiators, she will most likely fight on a prominent card. Yet even she may decide to pursue other career choices with more vigor now. Outside of Carano though there is serious concern for career opportunities. If the consensus number one female fighter, Tara LaRossa, is stuck fighting for a local Kentucky promotion it is easy to see why EliteXC's demise may be a major step back for female MMA.
