Can the WEC go to PPV now?

The WEC announced their plans to head to pay-per-view in 2009, but after last night they may want to stay on cable. Their biggest star, Urijah Faber, was a complete and total flop in his title fight. Faber looked arrogant and amateurish against Mike Brown who out muscled Faber before knocking him out. Then there was the Paulo Filho disaster. If it wasn't bad enough that he came into the fight 7lbs. overweight, he then proceeded to lay on his back for the majority of the fight. Don't blame Chael Sonnen for not pouncing, Filho's jiu jitsu is top notch so it made perfect sense for Sonnen to make Filho stand up and fight. But it was painful to watch the Filho sleep walk throughout the fight. Lest us not forget that former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver was knocked out in little over a minute. In the end last night was an unmitigated disaster with three stars defeated handily.

Where does that leave the WEC? With the WEC middleweight division being folded into the UFC it reduces the the roster of available fighters to the lighter weight classes. While there is more talent at these lower weights there are also fewer champions and only a few big names. Can Carlos Condit, Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres carry the organization to PPV? Maybe but they need some more help. Bloodyelbow.com thinks that the WEC needs to sign Gina Carano and the other female fighters to fill in their roster. WKR totally agrees with that analysis.

There are a couple of benefits that would occur immediately. First, it ends the misogynistic view of Zuffa, the UFC and the WEC. It also gives the WEC a new marketable division exclusive to their organization. Plus there is the added benefit of limiting the competition from grabbing these fighters.

While there would be some questions about a female division. For instance do you follow EltieXC's lead and have one division tailored for Gina Carano. Or do you create two divisions one around 145lbs. and the other around 125lbs. Whatever the final decision this would be a smart move for the WEC.
