UFC 91 Hangover

Brock Lesnar was simply too big and too strong for Randy Couture. While Lesnar may have been tentative early in the first round his size was just too much for Randy to overcome. The first round consisted of Couture grasping for position while the larger Lesnar simply overwhelmed and wore Couture down. With Brock's huge frame even poorly thrown punches carried such a force that they soon took their toll. Couture was felled in the second round and Brock immediately pounced raining punches that took the title away from 'the Natural' and handed it over to the new kid on the block.

Lesnar's inexperience was almost an asset as it hurt Randy's game plan from being implemented at all. Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga were out-thought by Couture, fortunately for Lesnar he didn't know enough yet to be fooled. Still Randy found a hole in the second round with his over-hand right, the same punch that knocked down Sylvia, but this time it only caused a cut. At that point you knew Randy's time was running out.

Brock Lesnar is now the new UFC Heavyweight champion, and will have the fortune of either fighting for redemption against Mir or new competition in Noguiera, whoever wins their respective fight in December.

Some thoughts on the rest of the card,

-Kenny Florian took care of business against Joe Stevenson. Both of these guys are class acts and great for the sport. Now Florian should be in line for a title shot. However he has to wait till after the B.J. Penn - George St. Pierre megafight. While Florian will be a massive underdog and probably unable to carry a PPV card he still deserves a lightweight title shot.

-Demian Maia submitted Nate Quarry in two minutes, this boy has some legit jiu-jitsu skills. Maia is now officially a rising contender. With one or two more victories he should be in line for a middleweight title shot. The question is who should Maia fight next? Since his submission game is so good there is no way the UFC will put their rising U.K. star Michael Bisping in a fight against Maia, would they? Actually they might and Maia may also get to be a TUF coach. Now he is a fighter deserving Goldie's favorite metaphor, 'meteroic rise'.

-Everyone needs to see Jeremy Stephens KO over Rafeal dos Anjos. Easily the most vicious uppercut in recent memory. Plus his victory celebration takes its inspiration from Wile E. Coyote.
