Dana White on paying Corey Hill's medical bills

If anyone was wondering how on Corey Hill's medical issues are coming along, then you will be interested in these comments by Dana White,

"Corey Hill is still in the hospital. He had surgery, they put a plate in his leg. We paid for all that. We covered all those expenses. He'll go into rehab, we'll pay for that too."

Corey Hill is also the recipient of a "get well fund" after he broke his leg during UFC Fight for the Troops.

It is good news that the UFC is covering Hill's medical expenses and it does set a good precedent. However it would still be nice to see some form of insurance for these fighters. White goes on to comment that it is near impossible to insure the fighters due to their line of work. While this may be a testament to the greater problems with the U.S. insurance market (damn you Canada and your universal healthcare!) it would still be nice to see a more formal apparatus by the UFC.

Is it possible for the UFC to create an employer-employee system, where Zuffa matches the monthly premium the fighter is willing to pay for? That way the fighter decides how much insurance he wants and the UFC helps cover their employee both in the gym and the Octagon. Think of it as a 401(k) for fighter health insurance.

Hopefully this issue will become mute with the new Administration but until then it appears that fighters are dependent upon the charity and good will of others.
