State of Welterweights

The UFC welterweight division is one of the deepest and most exciting in the UFC. In recent weeks it has also been extremely active outside of the Octagon. In the next few months there is potential for a serious shift within the division. Let's examine the top-ten welterweights in the world according to Bloodyelbow.com's meta rankings.
This is probably the clearest cut division with top fighters facing each other in one promotion creating a focused picture. So now let us take out Carlos Condit of the WEC and Jake Shields who is currently in legal limbo over ProElite's demise. We will also add in the next top two ranked UFC welterweights, again according to Bloodyelbow.com's meta rankings.
This picture appears fairly solid yet is in fact unbelievably fluid and is apt to change in the next few months. The most obvious change is the rumors surrounding Diego Sanchez drop to 155lbs. If that occurs the #5 fighter is out. But there is even more change coming tomorrow. Mike Swick will fight Jonathan Goulet and Josh Koscheck will fight Yoshiyuki Yoshida. Swick's future as a contender depends upon him winning this fight, a loss now would be a major setback.
Now if we look forward to UFC 94, the welterweight champion, George St. Pierre, will be fighting B.J. Penn for the welterweight belt. Alves is sidelined to fight the winner most likely. Jon Fitch is in limbo most likely to fight an up-and-comer with Hughes and Serra fighting each other in a retirement bout. Karo is most likely hurt again and then there a slew of new top-ten UFC welterweights needing to be sorted out. Now if B.J. Penn defeats St. Pierre then the UFC is in a serious bind with two stacked division waiting on one fighter. Who does Penn fight first Florian at 155 or Alves at 170? It is very possible to see the top of the division at a stand still after January 24th.
While a lot of the questions with regards to Swick, Yoshida and Koscheck will be answered tomorrow night (hopefully), it is still possible to see a new group of welterweights entering the top-ten within the UFC very soon. Still the top crust will be Alves, St. Pierre and Fitch. Regardless, the welterweight division may not be so clear cut now.
