Some thoughts while I recover from my UFC 92 hangover...
-UFC 92 will henceforth be remembered as 'UFC 92: Night of Upsets'
-Rashad Evans is the new light heavyweight champion of the UFC. Just typing that must make Dana White cringe. That fight was extremely exciting. Griffin used his leg kicks and superior reach to out strike Evans in the first two rounds. Watching the exchanges I couldn't help but think, why isn't Evans trying to catch a leg and go for a takedown? My faith was rewarded in the third round, Evans grabbed a leg kick and took the fight to the ground, rocking Griffin with elbows and punches. It didn't take long for Steve Mazzagatti to call the fight and for there to be a new sheriff in town
-Griffin is a class act, plain and simple.
-Did anyone else notice that Randy Couture was missing from Griffin's corner? In the battle between MMA's top two tacticians, Greg Jackson is victorious.
-I think the 'is Rashad a showboat debate?' can now be described as, academic.
-Speaking of showboating, a vampire mouth card, Michael Jackson crotch grab, Evans needs to change his nick name from 'Sugar' to "Showboating'.
-Nice to see the fledgling UFC statistics department being featured so prominently for main events. Keep it up research
guy in the basement!
-Where oh where did Nogueira go? Did he forget that there was a fight tonight? Did
Stankie forget to tell Big Nog to give his all? Frank Mir completely picked 'Minotauro' apart. Give credit to Mir, he saw what happened in the Herring and Sylvia fights, each time Nogueira was knocked down Mir made him stand right back up to receive more punishment. The first round was easily 10-8 and the second was fast approaching a similar outcome. Some may question Dean's stoppage but Nogueira's dazed attempt at standing was evidence that Herb Dean did in fact make the right call. While the fight is a great accomplishment for Mir, it leavesconfusion and questions regarding Nogueira.
-The UFC marketing department couldn't be happier with the Mir-Lesnar rematch. You can just hear Joe Silva saying "Nailed It!"
-I still can't believe that the C.B. Dolloway fight was shown after Jackson-Silva and instead of Okami-Lister
-Once again Yushin Okami wins by decision. Oh, that's why the UFC decided to put Okami on the undercard.
-Rampage finds sweet redemption. In a fight where many (including
me) questioned Rampage's mental status he proved his mental fortitude. Quinton was never caught in Wanderlei's vicious Thai clinch. Instead Jackson survived the early flurries to score a flush counter punch that knocked Wanderlei cold. These two careers are headed in considerably different directions then they were four years ago.
-Did anyone see the anguished look of disgust of Chuck Liddell's face, as Wanderlei lay unconscious? My how the Titans have fallen.
-Here is a question for the MMA world: is Wolfslair and English MMA rising in prominence or are they the beneficiary of a top fighter, In Quniton 'Rampage' Jackson?
-There are two ways to look at the C.B. Dolloway fight. One, he got lucky that Mike Massenzio showed poor finishing skills, after he rocked C.B. with two power punches. Two, that C.B. showed considerable skill in overcoming the adversity of being dazed and placed in a semi-tight guillotine choke. If you don't like Dolloway go with storyline number one, if you do like Dolloway go with storyline number two.
-Nice to see Goldie sporting the shirt with the top unbuttoned. Very reminiscent of
David Hasselhoff in the early 90's.
-Cheick Kongo does not like being hit in the balls. If you hit him in the balls he will retaliate and hit you in the balls. After your balls have recovered Cheick will then beat your face into submission.
-Matt Hamill will never amount to anything in the UFC if he doesn't utilize his wrestling skills. How many fights have we watched now, where he continues to use mediocre striking and completely forgo wrestling? When will he put to use his considerable takedown and wrestling skills?
-Another leg injury, maybe the UFC will show this one for free on their website too.
