Donald Trump, the killer of sports
When starting a fight promotion one will lose a lot of money. The UFC lost over $33 million before finding success with The Ultimate Fighter. For Affliction, the partnerships with Golden Boy and Donald Trump were good news, showing that the fledgling promotion had backers with serious cash help lessen early operating losses. However Donald Trumps track record with sports is not great.
Exhibit A, the USFL. For those not familiar with the United States Football League, it was created in the 1980's as a spring football league. The fledgling organization adopted many rules that the NFL would later follow suit such as, instant replay, the two point conversion and a salary cap. The USFL also gained notority by signing Herschel Walker as an underclassman. Walker and several other collegiate stars presence in the USFL made some believe the league would become a viable alternative to the NFL.
That all changed with Donald Trump. Trump lead the USFL on a path of direct competition with the NFL, moving the season away from the spring to the fall. Trump also lead the way on a anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL. Trumps goal was to force a merger that would payoff the owners through a majority of the USFL teams would die in the process. That legal attempt failed. Indeed it was Trump's bravado in challenging the NFL directly that led to the death of the USFL.
While Donal Trump brings considerable resources to Afflictions door he also bring a checkard past. Will history repeat itself with Trumps involvement in Affliction?
