What Happened to WEC 38?
Sunday night the WEC will put on a card featuring their lightweight champion and two of their best known fighters in Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver. Yet no one seems to notice.
The WEC is partially to blame for this mess. There has been little to no advertisement for their card, and lightweight champ Jamie Varner is still and unknown to many fans. Also, the Faber Pulver match up may be deflating some of the attention. These two already met just nine months ago. While that fight was the highest rated WEC show on Versus, it was also a dominate victory for Faber. There is no reason to think it won't happen again.
Some of the blame has to be put on the parent company, Zuffa. Clearly Zuffa's interest is in building Penn-St. Pierre 2 into a historic UFC event. The $1.7 million that was ponied up for UFC Primetime may be a reason why the marketing department for the WEC seems to be on vacation. Combine that with the crowded schedule of UFC 92, 93, 94 and the replay of UFC 91 and it is clear that Zuffa isn't doing the WEC any favors.
Then there is Affliction: Day of Reckoning. While there were rumors of the show being a potential flop, attention has ratcheted up in recent days both within and outside the MMA community. The hype is building around Fedor Arlovski and maybe just maybe the promotion's second show can repeat what Banned did in July.
The only problem is that the WEC has been forgotten in all the shuffle. I know where I will be on Sunday night, watching a quality WEC card for free on Versus.
