Freddie Roach: "Fedor got Lucky"
Freddie Roach continues to show that he has an extreme breadth of MMA knowledge with his recent comments after his new pupil Andrei Arlovski lost to Fedor Emelianenko,
"[Andrei Arlovski] made a young man's mistake. It was too easy for him. He was winning the fight handily I thought, controlling the fight like we planned. He got a little cocky, and he tried the flying knee from too far away, no setup, and he paid for it ... Fedor swings hard, that's his thing. He probably had his eye closed, but he just got lucky, I think. If we had followed a more disciplined fight, and kept to the game plan, I think it was going to be easy."
Roach may just be backing up his fighter, which I can't blame him for, but MMA is a different animal than boxing and Saturday night showed it. Arlovski looked good on his feet but he was by no mean picking Fedor apart. While it was apparent that Arlovski's hand speed bothered Fedor, Arolvski didn't land many shots, in fact most of his damage came from kicks, something that is outside of Roach's roundhouse.
Another point that needs to be made is that the fight never went to the ground. After Roy Nelson easily got to side control on Arlovski during EliteXC's final card, there is little doubt in my mind Fedor would of won the ground game. But that's my point, this is ultimately blind guess work about what 'could of happened' or what 'should of happened'. We have no idea what would've happened and trying to claim a possible result is on par to soothsaying, especially in MMA where there are so many variables.
