Fantasy #1 Contender Semi-Finals: #2 Jon Fitch vs. #14 Anthony Johnson
The UFC Welterweight Division has a plethora of young talent, a dominating champion, and many exciting match ups to choose from, but the one thing they lack is a true number one contender. I doubt the UFC would ever put together a welterweight tournament to determine a true number one contender (oh do I hope to be wrong), but we at WKR can have our own virtual (we're dorks, deal with it) tournament. The bracket and rankings have been set and it is time to begin the tournament. Let your vote choose who wins the most prestigious, meaningless, fake, yet enjoyable UFC Welterweight number 1 contender tournament.
The Semi-Finals are upon us and while Alves and Fitch cake walked through the second round the story of round 2 was the Mike Swick/Dustin Hazelett match up. Racking up a 162 total votes they split 81 a piece and had to go into extra day of voting. The 1 and 2 seeds have made, but we have two underdogs in the semis as the 12 and 14 seed have advanced as well.
The next match up is between #2 ranked Jon Fitch and #14 Anthony Johnson. Fighter details after the jump.
Jon Fitch 19-3 (1) (10-1 UFC): Fitch has walked through the first two rounds winning with 92% and 88% of the votes. He is probably the most well rounded fighter in the tournament, but he is yet to face a seeded opponent higher than #10. Fitch's game plan in this match up would most likely to take this to the mat where he has a significant advantage over Johnson. While Fitch's striking is constantly improving he does not have the speed nor power of Johnson to stay on his feet.
Anthony Johnson 7-2 (4-2* UFC): His WKR tournament run is an example of art reflecting life. Ok, so this tournament is not exactly art, but his run in the tournament is very similar to his current UFC career. He has been in fights with favorable match ups where he could (if this was real) highlight his explosiveness and striking. That streak ends against Fitch who is a top level welterweight. While Johnson is at a major disadvantage on the ground he does have an edge in striking. Is his wrestling good enough to keep the fight off the mat or will Fitch continue to make his way to the finals?
