UFC Headed to Australia in February 2010
The Sydney Morning Herald, of Australia, reports that the UFC will be headed "down under" in early 2010,
Legal representatives of the company have approached the Combat Sports Authority to seek permission to stage a bout in February, with organisers understood to be looking at the Acer Arena in Sydney Olympic Park.
Despite the sport being banned in 10 US states, UFC president of the British division Marshall Zelaznik confirmed that cage fighting was coming to Australia. "It's going to happen, we're coming," he said. "Planning is in effect, we've had a number of strategy meetings and we are on the verge of retaining some key partners in Australia."
A possible fightcard in Australia has long been a topic of rumor and conjecture.
In April of this year, Fighter's Only reported that the UFC was planning on holding an event in February of 2010 at the Acer Arena in Sydney Olympic Park. It appears that their reporting has hit the bull's eye.
No word yet on whether the possible Australian event will be on pay-per view. Sydney is an eleven hour difference from the east coast making a Saturday 10:00pm ET start time occur on Sunday 2:00pm in Australia (Time travel is possible!!!).
The Zuffa owned WEC did iink a television deal with Setanta Sports in Australia making a possible broadcast partner for a potential Australian show.
