Strikeforce Champions vs. Dream Champions Coming Soon?

Photo

Scott Coker mentioned during the Strikeforce: Emelianenko vs. Rogers conference call that he would like to put on title fights between the Strikeforce champions and Dream Champions.

We already knew that Dream and Strikeforce had entered a partnership to co-promote fights and share talent but title unification fights is a new development.

But as Michael David Smith points out the Strikeforce and Dream divisions don't exactly line up,

Featherweight
Dream: Bibiano Fernandes Strikeforce: None

Lightweight
Dream: Shinya Aoki Strikeforce: Josh Thomson/Gilbert Melendez

Welterweight
Dream: Marius Zaromskis Strikeforce: None

Middleweight
Dream: None Strikeforce: Jake Shields-Jason Mayhem Miller winner

Light heavyweight
Dream: None Strikeforce: Gegard Mousasi

Heavyweight
Dream: None Strikeforce: Alistair Overeem

Only one division has a champion in both Strikeforce and Dream though the winner of Jake Shields-Jason Miller could easily drop to welterweight and fight Marius Zaromskis.

Outside of that the cupboard is bare. There are barely enough heavyweights and light heavyweights as it is and any opponent that could be found at featherweight and middleweight would essentially be the #1 contender in that promotions respective division.

Still, we can't blame Strikeforce for trying to put together interesting and meaningful fights to fulfill their obligations for Showtime and CBS.

Hmm…..it wouldn’t be too hard to unify the titles since the only weight class with champs in each org is LW…..oh wait, that seems to up in the air as well.

Huh?

i don’t get why some people are complaining about this.

They didn’t say they were going to unify the titles by the end of the year, just that that was a goal for them, which makes MMA fans happy. Strikeforce should have a champ for every division, except FW by the end of the year as well. DREAM has longer to go, but they will be hosting GP’s or having championship fights to close those gaps.

Strikeforce Champs:

HW: Alistair Overeem
LHW: Gegard Mousasi
MW: VACANT (Shields vs Mayhem) Nov. 7th
WW: VACANT (Hieron vs Diaz) December Possible
LW: Thomson [vs Melendez (Interim)]
FW: VACANT

DREAM Champs:

HW: VACANT
LHW: VACANT
MW: VACANT (Mousasi dropped belt)
WW: Marius “Whitemare” Zaromskis
LW: Shinya Aoki
FW: Bibiano Fernandes

I think we can all see what the intent here is, even of some of the divisions don’t have a belt at the moment.

lol i was thinking the same thing when i saw that quote.

maybe dream will do a jacare vs filho for the middleweight belt then unify? other than that they just dont have enough any heavys, light heavys to do anything there.

the lighter weights can be all sorted out in the near future. would be nice if strikeforce would have a featherweight gp of their own and then finally have hieron vs diaz. i would love to see diaz vs zaromskis.
