Fantasy #1 Contender: The Big Kahuna: #1 Thiago Alves vs. #2 Jon Fitch
The UFC Welterweight Division has a plethora of young talent, a dominating champion, and many exciting match ups to choose from, but the one thing they lack is a true number one contender. I doubt the UFC would ever put together a welterweight tournament to determine a true number one contender (oh do I hope to be wrong), but we at WKR can have our own virtual (we're dorks, deal with it) tournament. The bracket and rankings have been set and it is time to begin the tournament. Let your vote choose who wins the most prestigious, meaningless, fake, yet enjoyable UFC Welterweight number 1 contender tournament.
Despite having a #12 and #14 seed in the semis and see Josh Koscheck lose in the first round we ended where we should with the #1 and #2 facing off for a shot at the title. Fitch and Alves are the last two to fight for the belt and both lost to St. Pierre via unanimous decision. In reality Alves still needs some wins to get another shot at GSP, but if Fitch beats Ricardo Almeida that would give him 3 wins since the defeat and getting closer to another shot.
These two have a small history with Fitch defeating Alves via TKO at the Ultimate Fight Night 5, but that was 3 years ago and neither fighter is close to what they were then. Common sense (at least mine) would give Alves the advantage on the feet and Fitch the advantage on the mat. This is a fight I would LOVE to see actually happen, but Fitch seems a little too close to a second title shot and Alves has a ways to go. Since I do not think we will actually get it anytime soon, let us speculate what would happen if we were granted the gift that would be this fight.
