Scott Coker Dreams of a Magical Place

According Sherdog, Coker wants his title holders to fight and defend title at least twice a year:

"In our case, with some of the other fighters, we had some issues, but we've gone in and tried to clean that up and we're moving forward now... From my point of view, I'd think the champion would fight at least twice a year and defend the belt," said Coker. "That's kind of the policy we're discussing with some of the champions that we currently have."

I really hope this true.  I would love Strikeforce to become a consistent promotion with legit title holders that defended their belt.  Coker does admit problems in the past and with the upcoming Miller/Shields fight it looks like they are trying to go in the right direction, but Zak recently mentioned the current title problems when discussing Dream/Strikeforce unification fights.  Additionally Overeem has not defended his belt in two years, Mousasi is already fighting a non title fight, the Middleweight title fight has not yet happened, there is no Welterweight Champion, and Thomson has not defended the title in over a year (injuries were a factor) I have higher expectation that I will own a gold platter unicorn that tracks down leprechauns so I can find their pots of gold.  Wow, that got weird real fast.

I think this is perfectly logical. There’s a reason for the term ‘the belt is harder to keep than it is to get’… and a guy shouldn’t be allowed to sit on ass if he’s a champion.

agreed completely. My claim is not that i do not think it is a bad idea. I am skeptical of it happening. The Dream situation hurts them here. Unless they unify the belts then the big cross promotional fights cannot be for the belt and they lack depth in a lot of divisions to have constant defending. I want it to happen, I just do not think they are there yet.

I hate to say it, but it is one reason why the exclusive contracts of the UFC make a lot of sense – they don’t have to worry about s*** like that, only injuries. It prevents the promotion from degenerating into the circus that Dream/Strikeforce kinda are (at least in this regard).

It does seem counter-productive to a degree, but not undoable. It might take a brass set the size of Daner’s pair to do it however, and I doubt Scotty is that hardcore.
