About that Interim WEC Lightweight Title...

The WEC went to great lengths to make the main event of WEC 43 meaningful. In the end they decided that an interim lightweight title fight between Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson would be the most effective way to fill in for the injured lightweight champion, Jamie Varner (who was injured due to fighting Donald Cerrone).

At WEC 43 Ben Henderson (pictured to the left) defeated Donald Cerrone in a controversial unanimous decision. to take the interim lightweight title and the right to fight Jamie Varner.

It is now looking that the WEC may want that interim belt back.

MMA Mania brings us a rumor courtesy of Rashad Evans from the most recent episode of MMA Live,

Earlier today on ESPNs "MMA Live," guest host and teammate of Donald Cerrone at Greg Jackson's Submission Fighting, Rashad Evans, had this to say when asked if it looked like Henderson and Varner would still be fighting in December to unify the belts even in spite of "Smooth's" medical issues: "No it doesn't, and it looks like 'Cowboy' is going to go ahead and get the fight with Varner."

So I guess that makes the WEC interim title completely worthless...

If there was ever a case for karma I think this development proves its existence. It is no secret that Donald Cerrone severely beat up Ben Henderson, just read this report Ariel Helwani,

According to Henderson's agent, Jason Genet, late in the fifth round, Donald Cerrone's heal caught Henderson in the left eye and badly injured it. That's why his eye was very swollen in the post-fight interview with Versus' Todd Harris.

Genet said that when Henderson reached the locker room, he collapsed and stopped sweating. He was then rushed to the hospital and needed four IVs to get rehydrated. Henderson was eventually moved to three different emergency rooms, and it was finally decided that he needed to see an eye specialist because it was feared that he might have a detached retina.

Thankfully, it was determined on Sunday morning that his retina was not detached and that he will not need surgery. Genet said Henderson still can't see out of his left eye, and is scheduled to see his eye specialist in Phoenix on Tuesday to get a final diagnosis.

The irony is rich.

Cerrone may have lost the battle, in part due to sub-par judging, but he was able to kick enough ass that he could still fight for the title.
