Fantasy #1 Contender Tournament Round 1: #5 Martin Kampmann vs. #12 Dustin Hazelett
The UFC Welterweight Division has a plethora of young talent, a dominating champion, and many exciting match ups to choose from, but the one thing they lack is a true number one contender. I doubt the UFC would ever put together a welterweight tournament to determine a true number one contender (oh do I hope to be wrong), but we at WKR can have our own virtual (we're dorks, deal with it) tournament. The bracket and rankings have been set and it is time to begin the tournament. Let your vote choose who wins the most prestigious, meaningless, fake, yet enjoyable UFC Welterweight number 1 contender tournament.
The next match up is between #5 Martin Kampmann and #12 Dustin Hazelett. Fighter details after the jump.
UPDATE: The last day to vote for any first round match ups will be Sunday October 4. The Second Round will start on Tuesday the 5th.
Martin Kampmann 18-3 (6-2 UFC): Win and you get a title shot, lose and you do not. Kampmann decided to try and strike against one of the best welterweight strikers in all of MMA who lacks a ground game. We know what happened. Despite a disappointing performance it does take away from the fact that Kampmann is still a very good kickboxer with a very good ground game. He is a truly well rounded fighter and will usually have mismatch opportunity with all opponents. A lot of times it tough to come so close and have to crawl your way back. Hopefully the Hitman (so original) can do that.
Dustin Hazelett 12-4 (UFC 5-2): A jiu-jitsu stud, Hazelett is one of the top young welterweights in the UFC. He is coming off two submission of the night awards, but is also coming off a long layoff due to some torn ligaments. His first fight back is against a very game Karo Parisyan and I was thinking the UFC would give him a softer opponent coming off such a major injury. He is not the strongest fighter and will need to keep improving his striking, but he is one for the near future. He has a definite slight advantage over Kampmann on the ground, but he would need to get Martin to the mat because Kampmann would do everything to keep the fight standing (we think her would).
#2 Jon Fitch vs. #15 Marcus Davis
#4 Mike Swick vs. #13 Dong Hyun Kim
#3 Josh Koscheck vs. #14 Anthony Johnson
#7 Paulo Thiago vs. #10 Carlos Condit

I don’t see the ‘great dane’ making this a win. If he isn’t submitted in the second round via guillotine, he loses on points and looks pretty mashed up in the process.

I am a huge Hazelett fan, but the early voting is really surprising.
