TUF 10 Episode 7 Recap: "The Rat"

Ratatouille_medium

Part of the appeal of this season of The Ultimate Fighter was suppose to be Rashad and Rampage's "friendly banter" in the lead up to their fight.

The seventh episode begins with Rashad mocking Rampage for being knocked out by Wanderlei Silva. Rampage responds in kind by reenacting Rashad's knock out loss to Lyoto Machida. Personally, I think Rampage showed some real acting chops in his Rashad impersonation.

After the teasing is done its off to the first fight announcement. Rashad chooses Matt Mitrione to fight Scott Junk of Team Rampage. Dana White tells us that Mitrione is a former NFL player while Junk is a UFC veteran. The Mitrione-Junk fight leaves two fighters left to face off: Mike Wessel of Team Rashad and Marcus Jones of Team Rampage.

After the announcements Rashad and Rampage through more verbal insults at each other, with Rashad telling Rampage he'll make him quit (an exchange we saw in an earlier preview). Unfortunately these two are not going to fight at UFC 107. What a wasted opportunity. Damn you A-team!!!!

There was an awkward moment during the first commercial break there is a preview for UFC 106 but it still features Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin as the main event. D'oh! Someone needs to tell Spike that the fight has been moved to January.

After the break we see Matt Mitrione folding up a note, which he gives to Scott Junk saying that Mike Wessel is afraid to fight him. Junk proceeds to tell Mike and Wessel is pissed off, calling Mitrione a "douchebag." The whole house proceeds to join in on the bash session.

During Matt's training session Rashad Evans informs us that Scott Junk is Team Rampage's best fighter. James McSweeny proceed to tell Rashad about the Mitrione's note. Rashad calls in Matt, or as he calls him, "meathead", to talk about the situation and Matt sticks by his previous assertion that Mike is afraid.

Another UFC 106: Lesnar vs. Carwin commercial. Come on guys!

Scott Junk's training session, and subsequent confessional, revolves around Matt Mitrione bashing. I am not sure if you have realized it yet, but Mitrione-hate has becoming a central theme of this show, even Kimbo Slice gets involved on the action (incidentally that fills this week's episode Kimbo-quota).

Back at the house John and Matt bumps heads over Mitrione drinking his orange juice. As Matt walks out of the room John says he would slap him. No big deal right? Wrong!

Star-divide

At the sparring session Matt and John are paired up and Matt goes at 110% causing John to quit, which sets Mitrione off. Matt ability to lose his mind is eerily similar to the Joker in The Dark Knight. The coaches escort Matt out of the gym right away and Rashad tries to calm him down, which doesn't go very well.

That night James McSweeney echoes Wes Sims earlier comments about Matt Mitrione being a rat, actually "The Rat." McSweeney prepares to make a calendar to see "what day will the rat snap."

Basically this entire season can be summed up in short rhyme. How much shit could a shit talker talk if a shit talker is in a reality show?

Later that night Wes Sims dresses up like a ninja-commando and sneaks into the yard in order to surprise Matt Mitrione who is playing basketball. Once they go back inside Sims continues to mess with Matt who is now playing pool. As one fighter says, "there is blood in the water and the sharks are circling."

It's on to the fight and let's hope that Matt gets angry or else this could be quick affair (but there's fifteen minutes left, so it will probably be a two rounder).

The fight begins with Matt catching a leg kick and throws Junk down. Mitrione let's Scott get back up and they exchange punches. Junk slips and Matt looks to jump in his guard but then thinks better of it. Again Matt catches a leg kick and lands a flush right and Junk hits the ground. Scott eats a few more punches and covers up and Mitrione begins to tee off but can't finish Scott. Junk gets to his feet and is basically getting his ass kicked. Junk goes for a single leg and Matt easily escapes the takedown attempt. Junk is really struggling and eats a straight left. But there is hope for Scott as Matt appears to have punched himself out. Junk begins to land some punches but is still being tagged with jabs. With forty seconds left in the round Junk comes to life and begins landing hay-makers but Matt refuses to go down. The round ends with Dana White proclaiming "Holy shit!" over and over again. Unfortunately round two probably won't be as good (I use the term loosely) as both fighters are gassed.

Round tow begins ad Junk has a noticeable contusion under his right eye. Matt throws some jabs then a leg kick. Junk responds with a right. Matt appears to be the more tired fighter but Junk isn't exactly bursting with energy. Matt is flat footed while throwing jabs and there is literally footwork. Junk pushes forward and lands a few punches then secures a takedown. Junk lands a few punches but both fighters are completely gassed. The referee stands them up and Mitrione lands a front kick. Junk responds with a right hook, he's swinging for the fences. Mitrione keeps landing jabs and Scott's right eye appears to be closing. It is a very ugly fight but both are still swinging as the round comes to an end.

Matt Mitrione def. Scott Junk via majority decision (19-19, 20-18, 20-18).

Rampage is mad at yet another loss (for the record he is 0-7 this season) and destroys a door. Looks a little staged but we already saw this temper tantrum.

The preview for next week involves Darill and Rampage talking shit, again with the final preliminary fight between Mike Wessel and Marcus Jones plus the quarter final fights will be announced.

I’m still hoping Dana’s proclamation of this season pans out, mostly because I continue to watch this crap season. My DVR ended the show right before the decision was announced and I really could of cared less. It’s almost like my DVR is smarter than me and saying “This show sucks so bad, you don’t even need to see the end.”

The fight was terrible, I am not mad at Dana for getting excited at the end of the first round, but there is no way he watched the second round and could honestly say it was a good fight. It was slop central and gross. Matt literally through back hand slaps, with no force. I was going to write a post today, but i am leaving for Chicago today and do not have time for a full rant, lucky you.

I will leave you with my favorite part (of course not the fight), “you feeling froggy, jump.”

Maybe?

I’m not trying to defend DW here, but maybe he is impressed by the fights in a comparative sense. For a real UFC fight, that last fight sucked. For a TUF fight, it wasn’t too shabby. I think, and considering that we are hanging out on a blog about MMA this might be true, we may be slightly jaded and expect too much out of these guys.

That being said, I am constantly surprised by the lack of cardio on these guys. Granted, I’ve never fought a day in my life, but it just seems that when this your “dream” hwo do you think it is okay to stand there with your hands on your hips?

I agree people expect too much from TUF when in reality a lot of these guys are either very raw or experienced, but lack ability.

I thought this fight was poor for this season, let alone TUF. I liked the Schaub/Demico, Nelson/Kimbo, Wren/Sims, and last week’s Schoonover/Jenson all more than this week. It was not the worst fight of the season, but when it is advertised as the best and it was one of the weaker fights it is annoying.

Even though Schaub/Rogers was short it was the best fight. As Rogers looks like he might have a real future (just raw and made a msitake) and Schaub looked good (not TUF good).

comparatively it was a better fight than what we have seen so far but that second round was hideous. First round wasnt that bad for Matt (actually Scott Junk looked horrible and he was suppose to be Team Rampage’s best?) but there was a nice lil comeback at the end
