Cecil Peoples does not Appreciate your Criticism
Cecil Peoples talked to Yahoo Sports about the criticism surrounding the judges decision for the Shogun-Machida fight.
"I'm really perplexed about how you give (Rua) this round, because Shogun was kicking (Machida) a lot in the legs, but every time he kicked him in the legs, he got hit in the face," he said. "Shogun would put his hand up, and Machida would go right through, sweat's flying off (Rua's) face. Shogun kicked (Machida) in the belly - that's how he got the red mark.
"But you gotta remember, Machida is stepping back, so when he gets kicked, he's getting brushed. But he counters Shogun with a hard kick to the belly. Which one counts more for the exchange? I give it to the (second one), because it was harder. It wasn't brushed."
Peoples explanation sounds a lot like boxing judge valuing a punch to the head over a kick to a body. It should be said that things look a lot different on television then they do ringside but in WKR's opinion it was clear that Shogun's kicks were causing more damage than Machida's counters but according to Peoples it didn't pass the "sweat test".
But Cecil People has a final word for people like us,
"If you don’t like it, you can go to hell."
Based upon Cecil's opinion it appears that there won't be any change in how the judges score fights. So what can we do to make things clearer?
Maggie Hendricks has an idea.
Why not show the judges scores for each round after the round is over. That way fighters will know where they stand during a fight as oppose to having to guess if they are ahead or behind on the scorecard.
Hendricks idea makes sense as it will rule out any confusion but the counter argument is that it will increase decisions with fighters grinding out sure decisions as oppose to fighting hard with outcome of the fight still up in the air.
Of course this argument is complete hogwash as fights where one fighter is clearly winning more often than not end up going to decision. In reality Hendricks' reform would only affect close fights that would have the potential to end up being controversial. This idea receives a vote of confidence from WKR.

1. Cecil Peoples is an asshole. You can defend Machida winning the first round and Machida winning the fight but that wasn’t the defense to use. Personally, I had the first two rounds 10-10 and the fight 49-48 Rua. Still, the leg kicks are meaningless and the moving backwards is ring generalship defense doesn’t fly. In the first two rounds, Rua was more aggressive and landed more strikes but Machida’s strikes were more “clean and effective” and had more potential to finish hence I called those two rounds a wash.
2. Open scoring is NOT the answer. It’s been a unmitigated disaster in boxing and is maligned by boxing press and fans alike. It causes fighters in the lead to coast and robs fans of some of the drama and excitement associated with a prize fight. Granted in boxing, the coasting would tend to go on longer since there are more rounds but, in the case of MMA, you’d end up with a lot of boring third rounds where the fighter in the lead will play Kalib Starnes for five minutes to avoid blowing a lead.

to your second point I understand but there is coasting in fights where one fighter is clearly ahead.
I do think that there is a cultural resistance to open scoring just because that is the way it is. When I first read the idea I was like WTF that doesn’t make any sense but then I was like, why not. Things change, like adding a three point line in basketball, the forward pass in football, the two zone pass in hockey. So it would be interesting to see a state commission try it for a while

Personally, I thought Rogan completely missed the fact that Machida was taking the low kicks to punch Rua in the face.
The decision was the correct one.
