Fantasy #1 Contender Tournament Round 2: #2 Jon Fitch vs. #10 Carlos Condit

Photo

The UFC Welterweight Division has a plethora of young talent, a dominating champion, and many exciting match ups to choose from, but the one thing they lack is a true number one contender.  I doubt the UFC would ever put together a welterweight tournament to determine a true number one contender (oh do I hope to be wrong), but we at WKR can have our own virtual (we're dorks, deal with it) tournament.  The bracket and rankings have been set and it is time to begin the tournament.  Let your vote choose who wins the most prestigious, meaningless, fake, yet enjoyable UFC Welterweight number 1 contender tournament.

We have made it into the second round; yes we are only in the second round.  However, there are now no more gimme wins (Alves vs. Larson).  What I found most interesting from round 1 is how much a factor one fight is for a person's voting.  For example, Kampmann lost to Hazelett and it was not even close (never would have happened before Daley fight).  8 fighters left, let's get it on.

The next match up is between #2 ranked Jon Fitch and #10 Carlos Condit.  Fighter details after the jump.

Star-divide

Carlos Condit 24-5 (1-1 UFC): Condit had a relatively easy first round with his upset (kind of) win over Paulo Thiago.  Condit received 68% of the vote which I thought was a little surprising considering his last two fights.  However, Condit is a type of fighter that could give Fitch some trouble.  Condit works relentlessly from his back and is quite dangerous which is something that could be a problem for a dominating wrestler such as Fitch.

Jon Fitch 19-3 (1) (10-1 UFC): Fitch dominated his first round match up against Marcus Davis by taking 92% of the vote.  This is not surprising considering many people believe him to be the second best Welterweight in the world even with his crushing defeat against St. Pierre.  Fitch is a beast who possesses great wrestling and great jiu-jitsu.  He also has 1 loss in 7 years and that is to St. Pierre.  Fitch could probably use his strength and wrestling to control the fight and probably has strong enough submission defense to hold off Condit.

Fitch would probably control this fight with his wrestling but expect a really active Condit from the guard.

I agree completely; while Condit would be able to cause some serious damage I don’t think he has the same motor that Fitch has.
