TUF 10 Episode 4 Recap: Rampage has Officially Checked Out

The fourth episode picks up in the aftermath of the Kimbo Slice Roy Nelson fight.

Roy Nelson is satisfied with the win while Team Rampage tries to make Kimbo feel good despite the loss. It sort of feels like a ten year old soccer coach trying to build up his team's confidence, "It's okay that we lost 11-0 today. The important thing is that we had fun and the guy who beat us is fat."

Back in the TUF house we get our first glimpse of Marcus Jones' teased illness/injury. Yet after the commercial break it appears to be nothing other than a lot of sweat. Nice job Spike TV (sarcasm intended).

Off to Team Rashad's training session and we get a brief introduction of the rest of Rashad's roster. Fans are then treated to a Team Rashad strategy session as they outline their match-ups for the next few fights. Rashad wants Justin Wren to fight Scott Junk, Matt Mitrione to fight Marcus Jones and Brendan Schaub to fight Demico Rogers. Justin Wren immediately comes back into the room and informs Rashad that Scott is one of his best friends, both inside and outside of the house, and isn't comfortable fighting Junk so soon. Rashad has empathy for the situation due to his friendship with Keith Jardine and the UFC's previous desire to have the two teammates fight.

We don't see whether Team Rashad adjusts their plans due to Justin's friendship but back in the TUF house Scott asks Justin whether they are fighting as Matt Mitrione informed him earlier. Justin tells Scott that as of this moment it appears that they will fight each other in the preliminary round.

Later Team Rashad members roast Matt for the ill-advised leak. James McSweeny thinks foul play is afoot and that Matt is hesitant about fighting Marcus Jones. Mitrione receives the nickname "The Snitch" and then confesses to Rashad who seems dumbfounded by the situation. During Matt's apology he seems to be channeling some weird Turtle-Johnny "Drama" hybrid from Entourage. Or in other words Matt appears to be a dumb, semi-lovable, meat head.

In a producer interview it is revealed that Rashad also believes that Matt is trying to change his fight, which is followed by a meeting of the Team Rashad braintrust to decide what to do.

WKR Side Note - Does it really matter if they know who they are fighting? If you picked the best match-ups for your fighters why in the hell would you change the lineup? If your fighter is an 8 and the guy you pick for him to fight is 5 would you then put your fighter up against a 7 just because the weaker fighter found out his opponent?

At the fight announcement Rashad reveals that Brendan Schaub will fight Demico Rogers so it appears that the larger strategy hasn't changed.

Star-divide

Generic trash talking between Rashad and Rampage commences outside. Too bad these two won't be fighting in December as these scenes are now stale filler.

At Brendan Schaub's training session we discover that he too is a Team Greg Jackson fighter and that he will try to utilize his boxing skills in the upcoming fight.

During the Team Rampage training session it appears the coaches to successfully diagnose Brendan's game plan and we are treated to a montage of Demico preparing to counter Schaub's boxing.

On to the fight.

Demico begins the fight with a few jabs and a leg kick, which he follows with an immediate shot. Brendan successfully defends the takedown attempt. Schuab throws his first combination then Demico closes and secures the takedown. On the ground Rogers postures up in Brendan's guard and lands a few blows. Demico then transitions to side control and lands a few elbows but Schuab reverses position and returns fire. Demico tries to get to his feet but ends up in north-south position. Brendan locks a choke around his neck and then rolls it into an anaconda choke and Demico taps immediately

Brendan Schuad def. Demico Rogers via submission (anaconda choke) - Round 1, 3:17.

Rampage is upset by the fourth straight loss. Team Rampage doesn't console their defeated teammate. Instead it is Rashad and his coaches that offer their shoulders in the situation.

Rampage doesn't believe in, "that passing the guard stuff" and immediately calls a coaches meeting. It appears that this is the point that Quinton checked out of the show, though Dana tells us it is because Rampage hates to lose.

I was trying my best to avoid saying rampage has lost his mind. Now I’m wondering if he ever had it.

i forgot to say, 4-0 and rampage still hasn’t broken the door… could rashad pull off a sweep? that would be pretty hysterical in my opinion.

I enjoyed this episode.

The one thing I like about TUF is how they obviously try to plant certain ideas in your head, then show the totally opposite during the end of the season.
 - So with that said, I expect Marcus Jones to do really well. Why? I think the producers are really trying to play up his knee problems.
 - We probably will not see Kimbo fight again on TUF.

Hopefully this season will endear Rashad Evans to some new fans. He’s smart, he cares and can take a joke.

How did a fighter who trains, but has often said he doesn’t care about training, doesn’t really mix things up during fights, get to play coach? Yes, Rampage is entertaining in an awkward manner, but he doesn’t appear to have any self-restraint. He can not take a joke directed at him but constantly will try to humiliate others.

Rampage put his hands on Roy Nelson’s face in the beginning of the episode. Roy returned the favor and walked away. Now, I’m sure Rampage knows the rules . . . you don’t put your hands on another person’s face unless you have no respect for him or you want to fight. Rampage has been crossing the line on a personal level far too often. I like him as a fighter, but he has some serious issues.

I feel sorry for the guys wearing Rampage’s jersey. They’re not getting half the training and respect that Evans’ group is dolling out.

The bullshit with teaser commercials to make you think “big baby” was going to quit and Kimbo would step up is really pissing me off. Is it their goal to have you believe nothing they say? Are they working to lose credibility? Can they over-hype this stuff any faster and accelerate the trashing of TUF?

Hype is one thing, misleading is another.
