Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Silva [Udpate]
A possible heavyweight fight between Fabrico Werdum and Antonio Silva is in the works for Strikeforce's CBS fight card on November 7th.
While Strikeforce has yet to officially announce opponents for both fighters rumors continue to swirl that these two heavyweights will indeed fight on the CBS televised card.
Fabricio Werdum (12-4-1) is a former Pride and UFC fighter. Fabricio had a successful run in Pride and was signed by the UFC after the Japanese promotion was bought by Zuffa. Inside the UFC Werdum lost his first fight to Andrei Arlovski but then defeated Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera. After a shocking knockout loss to Junior dos Santos Werdum was unceremoniously dumped by the UFC. After a lengthy free agency Werdum signed with Strikeforce and defeated Mike Kyle in his debut fight at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg.
Antonio Silva (13-1) is the former EliteXC heavyweight champion and was widely considered a top heavyweight prospect until he tested positive for steroids (Boldenone) in July of 2008. While Silva was suspended by the CSAC he left the United States and competed overseas during the suspension timeline (usually a big no no). Silva is on a six fight win streak and hasn't lost since 2007.
The Strikeforce CBS fight card features a main event bout between top heavyweights Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers. It is possible that Strikeforce would want to build up the winner of Werdum vs. Silva as a possible opponent for the winner of Emelianenko vs. Rogers. Conspicuously absent from this discussion is Strikeforce's heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, who has yet to defend his title, which he won in 2007. Overeem is slated to fight Tony Sylvester at "Ultimate Glory" on October 17th.
[Update: Note by Zak Woods, 10/09/09 9:22 AM EDT ]
Several sites including MMA Junkie, MMA Weekly and Sherdog are reporting that a fight between Werdum and Silva is a done deal.
WKR changed the post classification from "Rumor" to "News."

It’s been over a year since Bigfoot pissed hot, so I don’t see why IL would have a problem. He’s technically done his time. Plus it was CA that originally suspended him and they’re not really know for being on the up and up with this type of stuff.
Besides, Vitor pissed hot in NV and fought twice in England for Cage Rage during his suspension and his upcoming fight against the Spider is scheduled for NV, and there have been no red flags raised.

Interesting fight. What’s Bigfoot’s grappling pedigree? Werdum’s great on the ground, but his striking is atrocious. I’m not real sure who I think will take this one, but I’d lean towards Werdum based off experience and his high level of grappling.
