Kimbo vs. Houston at a Catch Weight?

Kimbovshouston_medium

The Northwest Indiana Times is reporting that the Kimbo Slice Houston Alexander fight is on and will be at catch weight,

The Times has learned from a source close to the Alexander camp that the fight has indeed been agreed to and that it will be contested at a special heavyweight catch weight of 215 pounds on "The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale" on Dec. 5 at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas.

According to the source, the fight was originally going to take place at light heavyweight. But Ferguson, the source said, is not able to make the drop to 205 pounds, and the two fighters agreed to the bout at 215 pounds. Ferguson weighed in at 230 pounds for his fight with Nelson on the show, which was filmed over the summer. And on a media conference call two days before that episode aired, he said he was then just short of 235 pounds.

For weeks there have been reports that Alexander and Slice will fight at The Ultiamte Fighter 10 Finale though it has yet to be confirmed by the UFC.

The possibility of a catch weight fight raises some interesting questions about Slice's position within the UFC. Dana White has consistently denied reports of preferential treatment for Kimbo though one could conclude that a catch weight fight is preferential treatment.

However, the counter argument is that Kimbo is a heavyweight fighter while Alexander is a light heavyweight so a catch weight is perfectly reasonable. However Slice is not a true heavyweight and many observers believe his size would be better suited at 205 lbs. thus Kimbo would need to cut the excess twenty-five pounds. But Slice's unwillingness to drop weight may be viewed as a sign of laziness. Then again Kimbo is no wrestler and cutting weight for the first time would be a difficult endeavor for a fighter making his UFC debut.

Perhaps WKR is reading too much into the catch weight development but it was certainly fun to do it.

Cutting 25 pounds for the first time at 35 years of age is no joke. It could be very difficult. 215 seems like a fair catchweight.

yeah, I think I am stirring the pot but Kimbo should be fighting at 205lbs.
