Parsing Dana White's Comments on CBS and Strikeforce

Dana White's comments to Dave Meltzer about Strikeforce: Emelianenko vs. Rogers have been making the MMA blogosphere rounds and WKR decided to examine each point White made.

"CBS made its biggest mistake partnering with a tiny, small show with a roster no one cares about," said Dana White. "Just because you read on MMA.TV that someone is a superstar doesn't make it true. This should prove that no one out there gives a [expletive] about Fedor."

WKR is not sure what White is referring to as proof that no one cares about Fedor. If he means the 5.46 million people who watched the fight or the 1.6 million viewers that tuned in just to watch Fedor and Brett Rogers then White may be slightly mistaken. The Fedor vs. Rogers fight was the ninth most watched fight in MMA history --three of the top-ten were Kimbo Slice fights and six of the top ten took place on CBS-- that looks like a strong result to WKR.

"We're pulling those numbers on Spike," White said. "I mean, how the [expletive] is what they did considered any good in any way, shape or form?

This is only half true. The UFC has pulled over five million viewers on Spike but the most recent example of breaking the five million threshold was due to Kimbo Slice (the previous two times were Rampage vs. Henderson and Ortiz vs. Shamrock). None of the tape-delayed U.K. cards have broken four million viewers and the preliminary lead in fights on Spike haven't broken two million viewers.

What kind of numbers do you think we would pull with a live show on CBS? I'll tell you. Huge. It would be significantly, significantly more than what they got with these idiots from Showtime."

An interesting position. Obviously we can't prove or refute the claim though one would assume that a brand as powerful as the UFC would do well on network television. Then again a hypothetical UFC network show would have to feature top fighters to generate big ratings. However, the real question we should ask is, "what is/was preventing the UFC from signing a network deal?"

"If I hear any of you guys [sportswriters] calling Fedor the best pound-for-pound, I'm going to go postal," said White. "Do you think Brett Rogers would have lasted two minutes with Brock [UFC heavyweight champ Lesnar]? What do you think Cain Velasquez would do to him?"

Unfortunately we will never get to see these fights to prove whether or not Fedor is the best heavyweight in MMA.

For the record, WKR isn't calling Fedor the best pound-for-pound fighter. In our humble opinion it is the UFC's Anderson Silva who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA (knocking out a top-five opponent in a weight class above yours is evidence enough).

Dana speaks his mind. Deal with it. His Spike show ‘UFC MAIN EVENTS’ – did pretty good for being stuff that every MMA fan should have already seen by now….I watched Strikeforce but it was a weak show aside from an exciting opening round and final fight…

Fedor hasn’t been tested in a long, long time. That being said…

Fedor Vs. Brock = Fedor fail
Fedor Vs. Carwin = Fedor close fail…Who hits harder, Rogers or Carwin? Carwin would have finished that fight hard..
Fedor Vs. Noguiera = Fedor wins by decision….DECISION.
Fedor Vs. Cain = Fedor loses by decision.

The only guys Fedor could beat would be Kongo, Mir, Gonzaga – but those are all WAAAAAAY HARDER fights than Rogers would probably ranks barely in the top 20 heavyweights.

mma fan or ufc fan

dana white says we shouldnt believe what mma.tv says about fighters like fedor or rogers being good. white and the ufc are really the ones hyping up mediocre fighters and putting them in main events. who did lesnar beat to get a title shot? name one good contender carwin beat to get a title shot? then you have all these no bodys/scrubs come out of the ufc reality show and get so much hype as if they are great fighters. (bonner, giffin, leben, ect) fedor is with a doubt the best heavyweight of all time. true mma fans will vouch. most ufc fans arent true mma fans. these ufc nuthugers, like kevin above, only enjoy ufc for the brawls. they need to get out of their trailer park, get there minds off the tv and go out and learn what mma really is. i think strikeforce brings something different for real mma fans. theres no hype/misleading there. what about all the controversial calls ufc has had lately. griffin over jackson, machida over shogun, franklin over w. silva. strange how the loser was a pride fc veteran. ufc has gone political like boxing, and thats one reason i wont waste money ordering another ppv. the other reason is that they will show it on spike tv for free anyways.

gonzage is stil riding the cro cop cop win ? did you forget that after the cro cop win he lost twice in a row by ko. 1 ko should knock you off that contender horse. dont even try and tell me that he won 2 straight after, because they were to nobody’s

my response was directed at funnytiger who was saying that Gonzaga was good contender that carwin beat. My point was that Gonzaga status as a contender was completely based off of one win.

There is absolutely no way Velasquez would beat Fedor. Brock and Carwin, maybe.

kevin my friend, you need to get real son -))

Your comment: Fedor Vs. Brock = Fedor fail

The Best Heavyweight Fighter in the World is Fedor Emelianenko.. Make No Mistake About it.

Your following comment:
Fedor Vs. Carwin = Fedor close fail…Who hits harder, Rogers or Carwin?
Carwin would have finished that fight hard..

You need to read Carwin response to who would win? Fedor or Brock
Sorry son, has Carwin himself put it: Fedor would beat brock, he’s so well well rounded.

The Fedor vs Rogers fight was more exciting than any UFC Heavyweight Fight That I have Ever Seen.. My opinion only, I’m from a Judo background.

Best Pound 4 Pound Fighters in the World, this is the REAL ORDER:

1. Anderson Silva – (hands down)
2. Georges St. Pierre
3. Fedor Emelianenko

Just because he didn’t sign with the UFC, doesn’t mean anything.
The UFC recently signed: Rothwell.. 1 year ago Mr Ben Rothwell was Knocked Out by Arlovski
Guess what Son? Arlovski in June 2009 was knocked out by who? that’s right… Brett Rogers

Therefore my boy, the UFC just signed a person that clearly isn’t better than Arlovski nor Rogers.

and No.. the UFC has their share of heavyweight contenders and so does Strikeforce and other organizations in the world.

Speaking your mind and being full of shit half the time are two completely seperate things.

nah they aren’t – sometimes they go hand in hand. Like when Lyoto and the Spider both said that Machida won all 5 rounds decisively against Shogun.
