Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort at UFC 109
MMA Junkie is reporting that a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort has been agreed upon for UFC 109.
Belfort first released news of the new date to the Portugese-language Terra magazine's "Mano a Mano" blog, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed with sources close to the bout that verbal agreements are in place. Bout agreements have yet to be signed.
The UFC had initially hoped to have Silva vs. Belfort headline UFC 108 but Silva's ongoing elbow issues --due to his recent surgery-- postponed the potential fight.
Anderson Silva last defended his middleweight title against Thales Leties at UFC 97. That fight was universally despised as being one of the biggest main event busts in UFC history. As a result of the Leites fight, Silva took a light heavyweight fight with Forrest Griffin. Anderson knocked out the former TUF champion with a fade away jab, once again endearing him to MMA fans.
Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, made his return to the Octagon at UFC 103 where he defeated former middleweight champion, Rich Franklin. Belfort was given a title shot after the victory.
UFC 109 is scheduled for January 30th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Matt Hughes is also rumored to be on the card.
