Koscheck vs. Johnson: Battle of the Eye-Pokes

112d53fc-3da2-4fa0-b968-bf2f6d7774a7

In all the talk of judging and controversy at UFC 106 WKR would be remiss if we didn't mention the Josh Koscheck Anthony Johnson bout.

In the first round Koscheck was the victim of an illegal blow to the head, courtesy of Anthony Johnson's knee. Immediately after the knee landed, time was called and Josh Koscheck proceeded to clutch his left eye in pain (pictured above). The broadcast featured replay after replay showing the knee striking Koscheck's forearm, which in turn hit the right side of his face. The replay, and Joe Rogan's commentary, seemed to indicate that Koscheck was exaggerating the injury, much to the disgust of Logan Stanton and Natasha Wicks.

WKR was prepared to write a defense of Koscheck's actions but then we were provided with this visual evidence of the validity of Josh's response.

The freeze frame provided by Bloodyelbow shows Anthony Johnson's thumb poking Koscheck's left eye.

Quick side note: Joe Rogan tweeted this about the above picture,

"For all the folks that said @JoshKoscheck faked his eye poke, here's the evidence that you're wrong: http://bit.ly/5GiP4i."

Uh, Joe, weren't you the one implying that Koscheck wasn't injured during UFC 106?

Anyway, after Koscheck recovered from the illegal knee/eye poke the fight resumed but took a potentially nasty turn in the second round as Josh Koscheck proceeded to poke Anthony Johnson in the eye, twice!

For WKR, this is the equivalent of a pitcher throwing at an opponent's head after his teammate has been struck by a pitch. It is very hard not to conclude that there was some form of reciprocity involved with Koscheck's open handed jabs.

Furthermore, it is strange that there isn't an outcry for a rematch in the MMA community considering that the bout was marred by illegal actions by both fighters.

Ivan Trembow has a scathing write up on his site summarizing the NSAC short comings at UFC 106. It’s a good read with a alot of valid points.

One other thing I forgot to add to my previous post. Since when did the octagon girls become so outspoken? I don’t recall Rachelle, Ali Sonoma, or Amber Nicole ever voicing their opinons of the nights happenings. There is a specific reason they were hired and it wasn’t for commentary.

I think it is more that no one really ever interviewed them before

Also Logan and Natasha arent dating a fighter yet like Arianny and Ali

I’ve seen Rachelle give plenty of interviews and as far as I know she never made any ridiculous statements like those two.

This most recent video is not the first time they’ve stated their unqualified opinions either. I’ve seen all three of them make various comments in recent weeks about fighters that come across as extremely unprofessional.

I mean, I am not shocked that they appear, misinformed.

It is basically the equivalent of someone asking football advice from a cheerleader

Exactly, and have you ever in your life for as long as you have been a football fan ever heard a cheerleader give her opinion….good, bad, or indifferent? As far as I can tell, NFL cheerleaders have a pretty good grasp of what their responsibilites entail. These three octagon girls do not.

I can’t access the video at work, but were they asked their opinion or did they just offer it up out of the blue? I guess if they were asked, than shame on the interviewer. But at the same time, if they were asked, those chicks should have recognized that no one cares nor are they qualified to give their opinion. They should have opted to talk their shoes or handbag or whatever other new accessory they had.

Forgive me for ranting so hard on this topic, but their statements are the equivalent to forum trolling, IE fighter bashing.

The guy at Cagepotato cared enough to interview all of them and get their thoughts on the night’s fights.

Ben is friends with the Raw Vegas TV people and they asked him to do it bc he knows about MMA. I think they should have asked someone who didn’t know what they were talking about. would have made a more interesting interview

From what I gather in his post of the video at CP Ben was drunk and not prepared as an interviewer. The women seemed drunk too, which reinforces the fact they should just said no comment and moved along. Maybe I am asking far too much out of a couple of 20 something internet models.
