Maybe Anthony Johnson Should Fight at Middleweight...

Picture_1_medium

After UFC 106, there were rumors that Anthony Johnson collapsed after another long weight cut. Thanks to Ariel Helwani and Cung Le we now know this to be true.

That makes it two fights in a row that Johnson has had issues with his weight cut. At UFC 104 Anthony Johnson failed to make weight and was so weak his team had to carry him to and from the weigh-in.

It isn't hard to figure out why Johnson is putting his body through such difficult weight cuts. Anthony Johnson dwarfed Josh Koscheck at UFC 106 and Johnson unofficially weighed 200lbs. on fight night. In a sport where size and power are such important factors it makes sense that Johnson would try cut upwards of thirty pounds to obtain the size advantage.

However, there is a point where the weight cut no longer becomes an advantage and becomes a disadvantage.

One has to wonder how much long-term punishment Anthony Johnson's body can take from the long weight cuts. While Johnson is still young, his body may still be growing and it might be in his best interest to stop the brutal weight cuts and fight at middleweight...

He’d still be a decent size MW…..plus I can’t really think of too many great 185lb wrestlers/grapplers that would give him trouble. IMO, big fish in a small pond mentality is killing him.

I think you’re bang on there, pal. And I also agree this could turn into a potential health issue and could have tremendous effect on what weight classes fighters go for.

Personally I think he needs to knock this shit off too. Move up already you jackass. Don’t make me make any more of these:

Devil's Advocate

Maybe he’s afraid of Anderson?

I know I wouldn’t blame him.

Atleast with Anderson he wouldn’t have to worry about the takedown. Plus, is Anderson even going to be fighting next year or will he be retired? IMO, Rumble’s loss at WW will lead to a longer path to a title shot than it would at 185.

I mean that is a good point but if he is having trouble at WW due to the weight cut he might not have a choice. Especially if he is still growing

Maybe he should get some pointers from the good folks at American Top Team. Hell, Ben Saunders is easily as big and he always comes in on weight and with a smile on his face.
