Australian Media Still Skeptical of MMA

UFC 110 may have sold over 16,000 tickets in a single day but that doesn't mean the Australian media is embracing MMA.

Take for instance this video from our good "friends" at the Sydney Morning Herald.

For those that can't watch the clip here is some of the narration from the beginning and end of the video.

It's been dubbed "human cockfighting" and its not hard to see why. Kicking a competitor in the head, choking him, its all in the rules and the more blood the better. The Ultimate Fighting Championships aren't for the faint hearted. But competitors say it is a highly disciplined sport that follows regulations.

....

But they warn don't try out your moves at home. Pain is all part of this brutal blood sport. Of course, watching it from the sidelines doesn't hurt at all.

WKR is really getting sick of that damn "human cockfighting" quote being throw around. Thanks a lot John McCain.

Here's another example from the lead of a story for WWOS.com.au

The controversial and bloody Ultimate Fighting Championship is on its way Down Under and has Australia’s football stars in its sights.

Then again, when UFC officials use metaphors like "setting a bomb off" or comparing MMA fandom to heroine addiction it really shouldn't come as a surprise when the media casts MMA as a fringe blood sport.

It’s really sad that these people can’t find the difference between the way it started and the way it is now, and are comfy with standard issue negative statements that are all too common. Makes it easy that way, no need to do actual journalism then.

This isn’t anything new.

The SMH has said this before and we (the sport of MMA) has been battling this the whole way through… and it’s never going to change. There are always – ALWAYS – going to be idiots who cling to the antiquated cliches about the sport and portray it in a negative light.

I don’t know why this is alarming or upsetting to anyone still… it’s been done 100 times over and will be done 100 times again.
