Mir and Carwin Expected for New Jersey + Bones Jones/Vera in March
MMA Weekly passes along a story broken by MMA Junkie or Mike Chiappetta (they are still arguing over who was first):
It appears the wait for a heavyweight title fight for Shane Carwin has finally been set, except it will be for an interim title, as current champion Brock Lesnar remains on the mend. Carwin will now likely face Frank Mir in an interim heavyweight title match at UFC 111 on March 27 in Newark, N.J.
The rumored bout has started to take shape sources close to the negotiations disclosed to MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday night. Possibility of the bout was first reported by AOL Fanhouse.
The UFC has struggled the past few months putting solid fights together for fans because of injuriies (with the exception of UFC 107). With GSP fighting in March, the interim title now happening, Jones vs Brandon Vera (rumored), and UFC 110 in Australia it appears the UFC is going to have a nice turnaround. UFC 111 in New Jersey is also looking like a New Years fight card, only three month late. Two championship fights and Thiago Alves are now rumored to be fighting in New Jersey.

Mir in New Jersey? Now that, sir, is fitting. Let the fist pumping begin.

bones is going to beat the daylights out of vera.
mir is a bit too good for carwin. i liked carwin against lesner but mir is too good for him.

i am a big jones fan, but...
vera is going to be the toughest test so far and jones’s reach will be somewhat taken away due to vera’s. Plus Vera is the best striker that jones has faced so far. I truly think Jones can one day be a champion, but i would not sleep on vera with this one. My guess is i end up placing a bet on vera because the odds will move once everyone jumps on bones (sexual innuendo intended)

I did not realize the reach was still that much of a diff. I guess the foundation for my statement is is that while Jones destroyed Hamill people are treating Hamill like he is a top light heavyweight. Do not get me wrong, Hamill is a solid fighter, but his best win is against Mark Munoz (bisping technically is not a win) and his style of striking was perfect for jones.

Hamil is a big powerful wrestler and Jones outwrestled him

yes
but i am referring to the striking. What makes me hesitant on Jones is what makes him exciting to watch. Jones is a very creative, yet wild striker, and the stalking, jab oriented striking from Hamill is perfect for Jones.
Against Vera he will face a solid striker that can capitalize on jones’s mistake or strike from the clinch which could nullify some of Jones’s attacks. Vera also proved against couture that his takedown defense is solid from the clinch as well. That is why i find Vera’s style a potential problem for jones.
However, maybe Jones makes me happy and continues to electrify. All in all, very excited for the match-up

Clinch-fighting beyond dirty boxing is awesome
I’m amped. I wanna see two Muay Thai fighters with Greco skills go at it. All this needs is some Wing Tsun and its a clinch-fighter’s wet dream.
sure vera is (probably, im a big hamil fan. i think hes underrated) his best test so far, but veras striking is way overrated imo. he blew through a bunch of ham and eggers early in his ufc career that included an out of shape and uninterested frank mir, but what has he done lately? Mike Pratt? child please. He couldn’t even knock out a china chin keith jardine.
even with veras striking i think bones is just too good for him. hes really really awkward for any great striker in light heavy, including shogun and machida, to figure out.

Carwin shouldn’t have ton a trouble with Mir. Brock Lesnar and Greg Nelson drafted the blueprint for how a big strong wrestler beats Frank Mir. It’s just up to Carwin and Greg Jackson to follow it. Carwin cannot afford to stand with Mir though. He lacks the footwork, head movement and general striking defense that Lesnar has. Plus he’s not as fast as Brock, so he shouldn’t mess around on his feet at all with Mir, whose striking has improved exponentially.
