Gilbert Melendez Wins Strikeforce Lightweight Belt via Unanimous Decision

Photo

If people thought the first fight was the fight of the night then they should check out this one.  Almost the entire fight occurred on the feet and the exchanged punches and kicks for five high paced rounds.  Thomson appeared to have more fun out there when Melendez was all business.  It was truly a great fight to watch and both fighters showed tremendous heart and passion.  Neither of them ever backed down and they both showed no fear.

Thomson landed the better combinations and had more speed, but Melendez landed more power punches and did more damage.  Round 2 was the only absolute round and that went to Melendez.  While the other four rounds were closer I would be hard pressed to give the fight to Thomson.  The right decision was made tonight, but do not worry Thomson fans as there will definitely be a rubber match between the two.

P.S. Thomson is a class act and acted better than a professional, he acted like an adult which is a rare occurrence in sports.  He made no excuses, gave Gilbert all the credit, admitted defeat, and show complete respect for the man on the other side of the cage.  Maybe when he was younger the punk moniker fit, but he has definitely matured and become an adult.
