Penn vs. St-Pierre 3 Kicks Off Heavy.com's 10 Fights for 2010

Just like everyone else, I make lists around this time of year.

Unlike a whole whack of people, I make lists of fights that I am dying to see in 2010.

instead of writing down countless things I want to change / don't like about myself in hopes that I'll finally decide that junk food sucks and copious amounts of exercise is the key to my existence, I write down ten pairs of fighters who need to stand across the cage from each other in the next 365 days.

Besides, I quit smoking cold turkey in 2009, so in the "Things I Need to Stop Doing" department, I'm good for another year or two.

Kicking off my list of bouts for the coming calendar year is a trilogy fight between BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre.

Despite every member of Team Penn believing otherwise, records indicate GSP holds a 2-0 advantage on his Hawaiian nemesis, so a third dance wouldn’t even be a rubber match. So then why do it?

Because it would be awesome all over again, that’s why, and sometimes, the best things are the frivolous indulgences that you don’t really need, like new sneakers or another opportunity to watch Georges St-Pierre smash on B.J. Penn.

Besides, two champions meeting in the center of the Octagon is never a bad thing, and you know that the new, somewhat bulked up version of GSP probably wants to put a serious beating on Penn for all the steroid allegations he and his camp have made over the last year.

Nine more of these terrific tandems follow, including appearances by Fedor Emelianenko, Jose Aldo and Shinya Aoki.

Find out who they're paired off with and the rest of the fights I want to see in 2010 by checking out the rest of the piece, and Happy New Year!

you sir are an idiot...

…and a GSP n*thu**er if you think GSP would make it past the likes of top UFC MWs like Marquart, Pahlares, or Belfort, much less earn a shot at the likes of an Anderson Silva. Based on your one sided comments on “GSP smashing Penn”, and the fact that you start and end this idiotic posting with GSP makes your unprofessional partiality or impartially much too transparent. I thought WKB had professionals on the payroll who were more observant and analytical when sparking discussion. Have you even been to a UFC event. You sir are a pip. Good day to you sir.

As for WKB, still a quality website for the everyday MMA fan. My only suggestion would be to reassess why morons like this Kyte fellow is allowed to place his fingers on a keyboard, much less access the internet as a representative of this site.

disregard the previous response

error was all mine. Was not a aware that I was responding to a fan posting and not to an actual WKB staffer. My bad bro.

From the Desk of E. Spencer Kyte, WKR Staff Member...

Do you really disagree that GSP smashed on BJ Penn the second time around? Did you not watch the fight? From where I was sitting, it went something like this:

DING – takedown – pass guard – punch/elbow BJ repeatedly – DING. Repeat that four more times until BJ’s corner decides enough is enough.

Additionally, how is being interested in seeing one of the Top 3 P4P fighters in the sport compete against other members of the P4P elite equated with being a GSP nuthugger? It’s not like I said he could beat a bear with his bare hands and an arm tied behind his back…

If you have some specifics as to why I’m a moron and shouldn’t be allowed to place my fingers on a keyboard, much less access the Internet as a representative of this site, I’m all ears.

Do you disagree that BJ smashed on GSP on their 1st fight?

I guess my gripe wouldn’t be with you personally…. Oh and BTW thanks for responding. My gripe is, let me say first as a fan of the any sport, it’s hard for me to adjust to the fact that even professionals are human and have opinions as well. My response was a tad strong and confrontational, for that I apologize. Now as for the GSP Silva fight, I have to ask you, have you ever seen any of Anderson Silva’s fights? After seeing the beating (with relative ease) he’s put on all UFC MW and LHW he’s face, and completely unscathed mind you. Do you think GSP would make past the first 30 seconds of round 1 if Anderson decided to end it early.

Anderson easily KOed Leben, Lutter, Franklin (twice), Forrest Griffin….FORREST GRIFFIN for God’s sake, with a straight right while back pedaling (well I’ll have to review the tape), and is the only other person asides from the Nog bros to submit Henderson.

I know your a fan of GPS, but that to me sounds like loyalty to a fault.
Am I a fan of Anderson SIlva? Who isn’t
Am I a fan of GSP? Absolutely And no I think he kicked BJ’s ass fair and square the 2nd time around. BUT, this new focused and matured BJ, theone that finally got his butt kicked is not the same as the one I saw in Vegas last January. And, yes I was at 94, was there for the weigh ins, and stayed for the open mic with Rashad afterward.
Am I a fan of BJ Penn? Of Course I am. He’s my favorite fighter… that’s why I wouldn’t want to see anything stupid and moronic like BJ Penn vs Anderson Silva fight. Of course unless it’s on my PS3.

by lestert on Jan 2, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Of course I’ve seen Anderson Silva’s fights. I sure hope that was a rhetorical question I just answered…

Don’t make it sound like knocking Forrest Griffin out was the greatest accomplishment in the history of MMA. Keith Jardine dropped him like a sack of hammers too, and Rashad caught him flush en route to the win as well.

While I think Silva would ultimately win a fight with GSP, I don’t think it would be the cakewalk you envision it to be. The supposed kryptonite for Silva is taking him to the ground, and we both know GSP has some of the best takedowns in the sport.

He’s also just as quick as Silva (if not quicker) and has a tremendous team behind him to get him ready. This is not loyalty to a fault either… this is just my honesty and truthful opinion.

I agree that the new BJ would stand a better chance against GSP should they meet again as well, but that doesn’t change the fact that “The Prodigy” got handled at 94…

What about Henderson?

I know at this point in time he’s irrelevant, but for the sake of this particular debate, how do you think GPS would’ve fared against another strong wrestler with cement in both hands? Of course, I’m back pedaling to a few month’s ago when Dan was still in the UFC.
Would I want to watch GSP and Silva fight? Of course I would. Hell if it’s in Vegas or California I’d most likely be at the event. I’m just saying why does the Superfight have to be the WW champ going up against the MW (who many will argue, is the consensus P4P fighter walking…did some say Fedor?) Why can’t it be GSP against Vitor? or GSP against Wanderlei? or GSP against… I don’t know a mid-level MW/gatekeeper like Patrick Cote or Kendal Grove, or Chris Leiben? Sure Anderson fought at LHW, but he didn’t fight for the championship. And yes, BJ fought GSP for the WW belt, but that’s because he’s a former WW champ, who beat the once upon a time greatest WW champ of all time, Matt Hughes, in the 1st round. But times were different back when BJ and Hughes fought the first time, and BJ was already fighting at WW.
Why let the fans blow their wad on GSPs first venture into MW? Seems to me like a disservice and lose lose for both GSP and Anderson. Anderson has not had a worthy opponent at MW since Henderson, and IMO the match up with GSP is not exactly a step up in competition, although maybe slightly better than Thales Leites or Patrick Cote. And for GSP, well when GSP (again IMHO) when GSP gets pummeled by Anderson, the loss is not going to his legacy any favors. Sure GSP kicked BJ’s ass, but BJ made it all the way to the end of the 4th, and was relatively unscathed, and was still standing. I still strongly believe that GSP is gonna be revived by smelling salts inside of 1 round against Anderson.

for once, i agree with you. gsp and silva have to fight.

however, im sure silvas people are going to piss and moan at fighting him and will instead take a fight with tito who has zero chance at beating him

penn vs gsp would be better than gsp vs silva.

though i would love for anderson silva to knockout cold gsp if he took the fight. there is really no upside for silva to fight gsp. i want jon jones to fight anderson silva. guaranteed fireworks. jones is aggressive while anderson silva waits and times his prey

i'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. i was building a house, i don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. bang. "unforgiven"

i don't know

I mean, GSP’s second victory over Penn was so thorough that I don’t believe that fight would genreate the type of interest/hype as GSP vs. Silva would.

Personally I would like to see both but I am just greedy :-)

i would watch both too

especially after first the penn camp said gsp was greased up and now i heard the steroid word brought up(penn’s camp). i like penn alot but he better bring his “a” game to third fight.

ok well i didn’t realize that this was posted on this blog as well

so heres the same response i posted on bloodyelbow

heres to your list

- GSP vs BJ if BJ Penn wants to fight at ww fine, then he needs to fight Koscheck, Alves Fitch, hell id even want to see him against Paul Daley, but until he gets 2 quality wins at ww we do not need to see him fight GSP again

- Rashad vs Rampage- we need to see a fight that we are most definitely going to see? really putting yourself out there on this one

- Varner vs Cerrone- i cant for the life of me come up with a scenario outside of injuries where we do not see this fight this year, if varner beats henderson cerrone will get a title shot, if henderson beats varner, varner and cerrone will headline for a title shot again really stepped out with this pick

- Aoki vs Kawajiri the only way this fight doesn’t happen is if aoki goes to strikeforce, outside of shady Japanese match making this is really the only fight right now for aoki in dream

- Larosa vs Kauffman fight will happen if it doesnt no one will shed tears

- Aldo vs Faber – this fight will happen as long as Faber beats Assuncao

- Fedor vs Barnett- how about Barnett fight someone in the top 10 and win without failing a drug test before he gets to try and fight fedor again, his last win was against Gilbert Yvel about a year ago, that shouldn’t get him a fight with fedor

- Lesnar vs Mir- as long as Lesnar returns this rubber match will take place

- Lauzon vs Lauzon- your an idiot

- GSP vs Silva- silva looks to be able to destroy a majority of the LHW division and you want him to fight a ww, if GSP wants to move up have him fight Vitor, Franklin or Maia, until he wins against someone like that he has no business getting an immediate shot at SIlva

so just to recap out of your 10 fights, 5 are almost definitely happening already, 3 would be stupid matchmaking and 2 really dont matter
