Scott Coker talks about Dan Henderson's Contract

MMA Fanhouse has been all over the Henderson to Strikeforce story.

The latest chapter includes an interview of Scott Coker by Michael David Smith. Coker answers some questions regarding the economics of Henderson's new contract.

We've heard that Henderson was asking for a lot of money. Is he now your highest-paid fighter?
Scott Coker: No.

Is he your highest paid other than Fedor?
Scott Coker: Fedor is the highest-paid athlete in Strikeforce. We have two other athletes who are getting paid as much as Dan, but I really can't say any more than that.

When he beat Michael Bisping at UFC 100 he made a $100,000 base salary, a $150,000 win bonus and a $100,000 knockout of the night bonus. Can he make more than $350,000 a fight in Strikeforce?
Scott Coker: Well, I can't go into the details but there are a lot of things that are important to Dan. One is the compensation, but another was keeping his name and likeness rights, having access to intellectual property rights. But I'm almost getting too much into the deal, which I'm not supposed to because there are confidentiality agreements. The bottom line is that Dan wants to be treated fairly and with respect and we feel the same.

So Dan Henderson is making less than Fedor? That means Henderson makes less than $300,000. Well, if you include what Strikeforce pays M-1 then that number may be a little higher.

Check out the entire interview at MMA Fanhouse.

For some reason I feel like IP and “likeness” rights are not and were not as big of a deal to Henderson as Coker is making it out to be… I mean his best fights were all, for the most part, in PRIDE, and he has no right to any of those. Why would he care if he owns the rights to the last 4-6 of his fights when none of them will really add much to his resume, other than maybe a Mousasi or Fedor fight? I think this really came down to money, and Henderson was hoping that he could play hardball with the UFC, and it backfired, and now he had to settle for less than he would have made in the UFC.

This isn’t to say I’m upset that Henderson is no longer with the UFC. I’m glad he will be able to help bolster SF’s LHW devision, I just think Coker isn’t being completely forthcoming and is trying to avoid the situation looking like they are picking up the UFC’s cast-offs.

Doesn’t it all depend upon how much EA pays him to use his image?

I didn't consider that angle...

But that does make more sense now that you mentioned it. I was thinking in terms of being the owner of his fight footage.

Too late. He was in Undisputed 2009. That means he signed one of those lifetime exclusivity agreements. Closest EA will get is maybe Don Henderfield.

that’s what I thought when I read it but then I thought why did Hendo such a big deal over his likeness rights.

What if he didnt sign over his exclusive rights

I would imagine he wouldn’t be in the game and he wouldn’t get a dime from said game. That was whole point of those type of contracts. It was to make sure if a fighter left the UFC, a competing product could not benefit by their likeness. If Zuffa wouldn’t let Henderson walk all over them in contract negotiations, I highly doubt they would’ve let him walk over them over video game likenesses.

well it will be interesting to see if EA announces him as a fighter as they tweeted that they will announce some new fighters
