Ben Askren Signs with Bellator Fighting Championships

Being based out of Chicago I definitely have a soft spot for Bellator and really want them to succeed.  They got off to a good start in Season 1 and have made a nice signing for season 2.

Bellator Press Release:

Bellator Fighting Championships announced Wednesday the signing of highly touted MMA prospect Ben Askren to an exclusive long-term agreement

"I am very happy to welcome Ben to Bellator," said Bjorn Rebney, founder and CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships. "Ben’s an exciting fighter with unlimited potential and an unparalleled list of Olympic and collegiate accomplishments. We believe he can become a true force in this sport. As an MMA fan, I can’t wait for Ben’s first fight in our tournament on FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo this April."

Bellator Season 2 begins April 8, 2010 and will run for 12 weeks. It will be followed by Bellator Season 3, which is slated to begin on Aug. 12, 2010 and will also run for 12 successive weeks.

This is a really strong signing for the promotion and a solid fit for them.  Askren has an almost unmatched wrestling pedigree and his MMA career is off to a strong start.  However, he is only 25 and has only three professional fights under his belt.  Bellator is a great place for him face good competition, but still provides him the opportunity to fine tune those skills.

Update: Bellator's matchmaker recently resigned.

Awesome is right

Every Thursday night, live fights. Versus, FSN, and Spike all broadcast live MMA fights with decent sized promotions. Definitely a good sign for cable tv and mma.

According to that press release they’re going to have 24 shows next year. I guess I’ll be watching a lot of FSN, and does anyone know when NBC is going to start the late Saturday night highlight shows is that April also or are they going to show highlightsof the first season sooner?

not sure when they are starting on the calender, but i know they are airing the highlights really late. like sports report late, ufc wired late, etc…
