Ultimate Fight Night 17 Hangover

- Joe Lauzon showed great grappling skills in his victory over Jeremy Stephens. The two went back-and-forth on the ground with each fighter finding themselves in a dominant position only to be reversed. At the start of the second round the two fighters exchanged a flurry of unorthodox punches but the fight quickly went back to the ground after the flurry. The back-and-forth on the ground looked to tilt to Stephens in the middle of the second round as Stephens cut Lauzon's forehead. But the fortune of the fight turned as Lauzon reversed into Stephens guard, then suddenly and powerfully transitioned to an armbar. Jeremy Stephens was trapped and valiantly attempted to scramble out of the arm lock. It was to no avail as Stephens tapped out with just 17 seconds left in the round.
- Lauzon's ground game looked superb in this fight.
- Strange seeing Hermes Franca in Jeremy's corner considering he pulled out of the fight due to an injury. I know he is Jeremy's trainer but you just imagine when a fighter pulls out of a fight, they are in a cast or a wheelchair or something.
- "Jeremy let go of the shorts, Jeremy let go of the shorts!" ~ Referee. This is why they should have grappling pants. I want grappling pants!
- Dana White made some earlier comments that Fight Night's show off the future talent of the UFC. With the exception of Velasquez most of the fighters were lightweights and welterweights, clearly these two divisions are the deepest for the UFC.
- Did anyone else get the feeling that two of the fights were essentially cans. I am looking at you Denis Stojnic and Luigi Fioravanti.
- Anthony Johnson is a monster at 170lbs. It is now time to put Johnson up against some top welterweights. On a side note, it has been interesting to see the UFC go to the junior college wrestling talent pool i.e. Anthony Johnson and Jon Jones.
- How much smaller did Mac Danzig look compared to Neer? Danzig already dropped from 170 to 155, perhaps another drop to 145 may be in order?
- Josh Neer is kind of insane. Besides the whole DUI thing, he looked really cocky and reckless in his fight. Danzig tagged him a couple of times and cut him as well, but Neer just kept on coming. In the end he pulled off a strong triangle choke submission, it was actually his second attempt of the evening, but this time he finished it.
- My gambling advice was shit last night (I told you not to listen to me), well except the Kurt Pellegrino pick.
- Was every Octagon Girl cutaway to Edith?
- Velasquez needs competition worthy of his pedigree, (more on this later this week).
- Stojnic was essentially a can, kind of disappointing but I guess there just isn't a lot of talent at heavyweight.
- Fight Night sponsors were the movie Jason and the videogame Streetfighter IV, that seems about right.
- We saw the Matt Veach Matt Grice fight and Joe Rogan was critical os the stoppage, I disagree. Grice was knocked down by a haymaker, and then five flush hammerfists were landed (two missed). The blow that caused the stoppage whipped Grice's head back, it was at that moment the referee correctly ended the bout.

I agree with all but...
Grice was in no worse shape than Veach was in the beginning of the fight. I thought it was going to be stopped after Grice dropped Veach and landed some really clean unblocked shots but the ref let it go. If the ref wasn’t going to stop it there he shouldn’t have stopped it at the end. Grice was not unconsious and he wasn’t really given a chance to defend himself.
I think Cain getting KO of the night is a joke. Does the UFC have to give out a KO of the night bonus?
I was impressed with Danzig’s in the pocket striking but he disappointed me with his utter lack of respect for Neer’s submission skills. How does a guy as seasoned as Danzig get caught in a triangle like that?
