I've got a bad feeling about catchweights
My latest article is up on MMA Convert. In it I describe why I am extremely uncomfortable with catchweight main events. Here are some highlights.
Considering all the questions surrounding Franklin and Silva, the match up makes perfect sense for the UFC. After all it puts to use two of their more marketable stars in a debut bout in Germany.
So why am I so uncomfortable with the fight?
It is because it reminds me of boxing....
Could Franklin vs. Silva start is own trend, and reshape the way we look at the UFC and MMA. Well it has already started, Robbie Lawler and Jake Shields will fight for Strikeforce at a catchweight. If this trend continues I am afraid that it is a step towards the business model of boxing and that way madness lies.

Silva vs Frankin doesn’t bother me much but Strikeforce is showing some disturbing trends, especially with Shields vs Lawler. I mean they’re contesting fight at a catch weight that’s only THREE POUNDS under the middleweight limit. That’s just plain stupid. Why not just make the fight at Middleweight and if Shields comes in at 182lbs or 180lbs, so what.
i think it’s an advent of the massive weight classes MMA still imposes, in a sport which has grappling as a significant part. boxing has less about strength/weight ration and yet they have 7 lb weight classes. MMA in the UFC anyway, has 15 lb weight classes which is absurd.
