UFC 100 to have competition

The UFC's centennial event on July 11th may have some competition.

Yesterday news broke that Affliction is considering counter-promoting UFC 100 with a fightcard on networkd or cable.

Micahel Rome of Bloodyelbow instantly laid out all possibilities of what Affliction is trying to do.

Now there is word that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is looking to return to boxing on that same weekend. Apparently July 11th is just a hot date.

With regards to the Affliction counter-promotional rumor, it appears that this is more of a negotiating method with the UFC. The two organizations were talking in the aftermath of Affliction's first show, so this could be an attempt to jump start talks. Also if Affliction could pull off a live network fightcard featuring Fedor and other top heavyweights that could be a real thorn in the UFC's side.

With regards to Mayweather Jr. and his desire to come back to boxing, nothing could be better for the UFC (as long as Affliction doesn't counter promote). July 11th would then hold two major PPV events, one for MMA and one for boxing. The mainstream press would have a field day, tapping into their favorite storyline boxing vs. MMA. Of course the fans are not necessarily mutually exclusive but both are big enough events to draw their own crowds. Still if the UFC were to win the buy rate war it would be looked upon as another major coup for MMA.
