A lot riding on UFC 97
Looking up and down the roster for UFC 97 and there are several fighters who may be at the end of their UFC run, whether forced or voluntary. Here's a look at some of the fighters who may not be around if they lose.
The first and most prominent is Chuck Liddell. Dana White got headlines when he stated that he wanted see 'more' out of Liddell. Since the former UFC light heavyweight champion is 1-3 in his past four fights and pushing 40 years old, if he loses it is quite conceivable to see him bowing into retirement. Well, at least for a little while.
There is also Liddell's opponent Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua. shogun has only fought twice in the UFC since 2007. Part of that has been Rua's long ACL rehab. In Shogun's first fight since the surgery he looked far from the top fighter he was in Pride. With his large contract, and failure to live up to his Pride potential, Zuffa may cut their loses. Like they did with another young Pride star in Sokoudjou.
Ed Herman is 3-4 in the UFC. After losing his first two bouts, 'Short Fuse' put on a three fight win streak. Then he lost to Demian Maia. Not a bad loss but Herman followed it up with a defeat against Alan Belcher. Since Belcher beat Denis Kang that loss doesn't look quite as bad. But that doesn't mean Herman is safe. A loss to journeymen David Loiseau may send Herman packing.
Ryo Chonan is 1-2 in the UFC and when you are in the welterweight division you are not long for the door if you slip to 1-3. Chonan does have the benefit of facing a UFC newcomer in T.J. Grant. But that doesn't mean he is in for cake walk.
Sam Stout was a once highly touted lightweight, now he has lost his past two fights and the third may send him out of the UFC. Stout lost to both Terry Etim and Rich Clementi. Clementi was recently cut by the UFC after his own two fight losing streak. If Stout loses to Matt Wiman his days may be numbered
