If Liddell doesn't retire a list of possible fights

A decision is comming next week on whether Liddell will retire or not. Most sign point to the former UFC light heavyweight hanging th egloves up. But if he doesn't here is a list of possible opponents.

  • Wanderlei Silva - The only fight that Liddell has looked good in his past five. While the luster has clearly come off of this match up it could still work. After Ali and Frazier met for a third time at the end of their careers and it became the Thrilla in Manila.
  • Tito Ortiz - Who wouldn't want to see Chuck Liddell beat Tito Ortiz one last time. The sad thing  is we have seen the blueprint on how to beat Liddell, but Tito's stand up is so poor Liddell could probably walk him down. The UFC could make this fight happen easily and it would be a nice way to send Liddell off.
  • Luiz Cane - If Liddell wants one more fight and against a real opponent then he might as well fight Cane. Liddell would be filling the role of gate keeper.
  • Winner of Thiago Silva/Forrest Griffin - If Thiago wins it is another gatekeeper fight. If Forrest wins then it is a mega bout between the old and young lion. Though that hasn't gone to well for Liddell. The one advantage of fighting Forrest, he isn't that powerful. Liddell may not be knocked out.
  • Randy Couture - The final, final, no really, the final chapter between Couture and Liddell.
  • Big Nog - Now this would be intriguing. Both fighters may have take one too many punches so why not have them fight in a heavyweight bout and cash in on their star power.
  • Dan Henderson/Rich Franklin - Both fighters are hoping back and forth between light heavyweight and middleweight divisions. Thus the fighters are somewhat stuck in a weird 205-185 time warp. Both are former champions so a fight with Liddell would be interesting. Personally Liddell could beat both fighters, since both rely heavily on the clinch like Couture does. Liddell has proven solid against clinch focused fighters
  • Anderson Silva- Just kidding. But does anyone else remember when this was a dream mega-fight? Now Silva is obsessed with Roy Jones Jr. and Liddell is old.

Now outside of the UFC there are several fights that could work

  • Tito Ortiz - Ortiz goes both inside the UFC and outside the UFC because he is still a free agent. Same reasons as above.
  • Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic - A feared striker that had a percipitous fall from grace. Cro Cop is basically Chuck Liddell, that is why it is a match made in heaven!
  • Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou - Sokoudjou exploded onto the scene in Pride with wins over Arona and Lil' Nog. Unfortunately his UFC career wasn't that good.
  • Renato 'Babalu' Sorbal - This would be the third enstallment of Babalu vs. Iceman. Liddell triumphed the first two times so people would tune in to see if Liddell still has it. Of course if he loses then another ton of dirt will be pilled onto his grave.
  • Alistair Overeem - Chuck beat Overeem before his biceps started growing at the rate of 2 cm a year. So there could be some interest to see these two square off.
  • Ricardo Arona - one of the top Pride fighters that just completely disappeared once the organization was bought. This would be the classic grappler vs. striker match that Liddell was so dominant at.
  • Lil' Nog - I just realized I am essentially naming every light heavyweight with some name recognition not in the UFC so why not make the list complete and add Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

I think so too.

In fact a lot of these fights I wouldn’t mind seeing. Now are they wise for Liddell’s legacy and health? Probably not.

On the other hand if he wasn’t that frugal with his money we could easily see him fight again in 18 months.

Ehh….the only fight I would be remotely interested in is Liddell/Henderson.

I completely understand.

I would actually like to see Cro Cop-Liddell. Both blew up spectacularly. Why not watch them fight then.

Cro-cop would kick Chuck’s head clean out of the cage. It would be a great match-up for CC, Chuck wouldn’t be trying to take him down or get into the clinch, he’d just be presenting a nice slow target for a LHK.

part of the reason why I would pay to see it.
