Bellator V, Live Results and Commentary

Bellator_5_medium

WKR will be at Bellator V and for some reason they decided to give us press passes. So as long as there is WiFi (and there should be) we will be doing live updates.

The live blog will start before the show around 7:00pm EST. If you don't want spoilers then stop reading this post. If you do want spoilers then follow me after the jump...

[UPDATE: Note by Zak Woods, 05/01/09 7:05 PM EDT ]

Alright I have arrived in Dayton despite the monsoon. So let's make sure the internet works here...

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter for some more off-the-cuff analysis.

Star-divide

Non-Televised Bouts:

Frank Carabello (3-0) vs. Waylon Lowe (3-2)

Round 1- Frank scores with an early leg kick and both fighters circle each other. Frank throws several more leg kicks and Lowe shoots in and secures the takedown. Waylon Lowe works in Carabello's guard. Frank tries to secure and arm bar but Lowe pulls out and lands two quick punches. Waylon is using a classic wrestler strategy, pin his opponent against the cage and land strikes. Lowe lands a few more elbows before being stood up by the referee. Carabello takes the center of the cage trying to score points before he end of the round. Waylon counter a leg kick with a big slam and we are back on the ground. WKR scores the round 10-9 for Lowe

Round 2- Frank takes the center of the cage again but Waylon quickly shoots in again and secures a takedown. Carabello needs to stop throwing kicks and focus on preventing the powerful takedowns. Frank tries a kimura but Lowe quickly transitions to side control. Waylon sinks in the guillotine but it appears too loose to be dangerous. Carabello sneaks out and is once again in guard. Lowe lands several elbows and transitions to side control. Frank is trying to defend against the  crucifix but Lowe lands several short elbows. Frank tries to spin out but can't escape Lowe's side control. Frank gets back to guard before the end of the round. WKR scores it 10-9 for Lowe.

Round 3- Carabello has a large welt under his right eye. Lowe seems tentative looking for a takedown. Instead he lands a super man punch. There is a flurry of punches and Lowe once again takes down Frank. Waylon transitions to side control. Frank bucks and spins back into guard avoiding a guillotine choke. Lowe is back in side control with just two minutes to go. Lowe continues to land short elbows. Waylon secures full mount with ten seconds to go but it unable to finish the fight. WKR scores the final round 10-9 for Lowe.

Waylon Lowe def. Frank Carabello via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Non-Tournament Preliminary Bouts:

Justin Edwards (1-0) vs. John Troyer (8-2)

Round 1- Edwards lands a big right hand to start out and both fighters stumble in the clinch. Edwards lands another punch but is taken down. Troyer immediately mounts but is bucked out of it with Edwards on top. Troyer tries to secure an armbar but Edwards is mount landing huge blows. The crowd is screaming. The action slows as Edwards locks in a guillotine but Troyer pulls out and is now in the mount. Fighters stand and Edwards lands a right a knee and another right hook.  I can't keep up with the action. Edwards and Troyer trade  punches and its a slug match. Troyer's turn to land a knee then another now Edwards takes Troyer down and secures a much better guillotine and submits Troyer.

Justin Edwards def. John Troyer via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1, 3:12.

Tammy Schneider (3-6) vs. Jessica Pene (5-0)

This is the first ever Women's MMA bout in Bellator history, nice.

Round 1- Pene looks confident and has a tremendous height and reach advantage over Tammy. Pene lands a left kick and both fighters clinch. Jessica takes Tammy down and has her back. Pene begins to rain down punches and Tammy is unable to mount an intelligent defense. The fight is called with Jessica triumphant. Hopefully the female talent pool increases for Bellator as Tammy Schneider was clearly out of her league.

Jessice Pene def. Tammy Schneider vie TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 1:35.

Pete Dominguez (9-3) vs. Matt Jaggers (10-5)

Round 1- Fighters touch gloves and Matt lands an inside leg kick. Both fighters trade jabs as Pete loads up with a big right hand but misses. Both fighters clinch Matt secures a take down and immediately transitions to mount landing several big punches. Pete tries to sprawl out but gives up his back. Jaggers tries to secure the rear-naked choke but it is defended. The fighters move away from the cage and without its protection Jaggers is able to flatten out Pete and sink the choke in.

Matt Jaggers def. Pete Dominguez via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 4:03.

Dan Evensen (10-4) vs. Raoul Romero (3-1)

Round 1- Raoul may be forty and only fought four times but he is pushing the action with several early leg kicks. Evensen clinches with Romero and both fighters posture for position. Evensen is larger by thirty pounds so Romero is struggling with his opponent's size. Romero eats a left hook and goes to the ground to avoid further punches. Evensen is now in half guard. Both fighters make it to their feet and exchange jabs. Romero lands a right leg kick but gets greedy with one to the head. Evensen avoids the kick responds with two straight punches. Romero wisely takes the fight to the ground and is now in side control. Raoul now mounts Dan with ten seconds left but appears to be too tired to do any real damage.

Round 2- Romero shoots in after two lazy jabs. Evensen successfully sprawls and takes dominant position on the ground. Not a lot of action as Dan switch from guard to half guard. The boo birds are out and on cue Evensen switches to mount and rains down several punches forcing the referee to step in.

Dan Evensen def. Raoul Romer via submission (strikes) - Round 2, 1:44.

Sherman Pendergarst (11-12) vs. Joey Beltran (6-2)

Round 1- Both fighters trade jabs and clinch. Beltran lands several knees to Sherman's leg. Sherman circles out and exchanges punches with Beltran but neither fighter connects. Beltran is pushing the action and lands a three punch combo. Sherman tries to counter but misses as Beltran lands another combo. Pendergast is wobbly and falls over and Beltran thinks the fight is over but the referee has yet to call it. Beltran then pounces and lands several punches. The referee quickly steps in and calls the fight.

Joey Beltran def. Sherman Pendergarst  via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 2:24.

Josh Barnes (4-1) vs. Dave Herman (14-1)

Herman enters to a rendition of 'Why Can't We Be Friends' and the crowd loves it.

Round 1- Barnes comes out with a flurry of punches and is not intimidated by Herman's athleticism. Herman lands a knee but eats a punch. Barnes is still pushing the pace throwing punch after punch. Herman slows Barnes down with a leg kick and both fighters clinch. Herman lands a short elbow and a jab and circles out. Barnes is still pushing forward. Herman takes out Barnes leg with a kick and Barnes hits the mat. Barnes stands up and backs away looking to the referee for an illegal low blow but the referee allows the fight to continue. Both fighters clinch and this time Herman lands a knee to Barnes' groin and he instantly drops. The referee calls time and no point is deducted. Barnes stands up to applause and tries to shake off the pain though he is visibly in discomfort. Action resumes and Barnes comes out swinging landing several punches. Herman clinches and lands a knee to the head. Herman goes back to the leg kick in an attempt to take away Barnes cardio. Barnes lands a jab. Both fighter look tired and Herman's hands are way down. Herman clinches and lands a knee flush to Barnes' jaw. Barnes goes down and eats several more punches before the referee tackles Herman to stop the fight.

Dave Herman def. Josh Barnes via TKO (strikes) Round - 1, 4:46.

Tournament Bouts:

Toby Imada (21-12) vs. Jorge Masvidal (17-3)

Imada works to his feet but eats a flying knee from the taller Masvidal. Imada pushes the pace and lands several body shots. Imada lands two leg kicks to Masvidals left leg. Both fighters trade jabs as the round comes to a close. WKR scores the first round 10-9 for Masvidal.

Round 2- Imada comes out with a leg kick again. Imada lands a combination and Masvidal smiles both fighters touch gloves in mutual respect and the action continues. The crowd now stars chanting Jorge. Masvidal works the left jab. Imada keeps pushing forward and eats a stiff right hand. Imada shows no signs of pain and throws a left hook. There is a scrum and both fighters land shots. Imada goes to the body with a  leg kick. Imada lands a good right hand right before the end of the round. Masvidal takes the round again with more effective striking. WKR scores it 10-9 for Masvidal.

Round 3- Imada lands an early punch and Masvidal is hurt. Imada takes him to the ground but Masvidal spins out and both fighters are now standing. Masvidal lands a powerful body shot. He follows it up with a leg kick to the liver. Imada throws a left hook to the body but it lands low. There is an inadvertent low blow and the ref calls time. The fight resumes and Imada has a bruise beneath his right eye. Imada pushes forward trying to make something happen but Masvidal is keeping his distance relying on the left jab. Imada shoots and takes Masvidal down. Jorge tries to sprawl and stand up. Now Imada is on Masvidal's back while Jorge his standing and locks in a triangle choke (I KID YOU NOT) Masvidal falls to the ground unconscious.

Toby Imada def. Jorge Masvidal via technical submission (triangle choke) - Round 3, 3:22.
Toby Imada advances to the finals of the Bellator lightweight tournament.

Round 1- No tap of the glove between the fighters as they immediately begin to circle each other. Reynolds throws s a leg kick and Alvarez shoots in and secures the takedown. Reynolds secures Eddie in his guard. Alvarez lands several shots then bucks up and lads a big right hand. Alvarez transitions to side control then to full mount and backs Reynolds towards the cage. Reynolds stands up when Alvarez was trying to move him backward and now both fighters are clinched. Alvarez breaks and shoots but Reynolds avoids it and land a right head kick. Alvarez shots again and tries to transition to Reynolds back but Eric successfully defend it. Alvarez shoots again pushing Eric to the cage and this time secure Reynolds on the ground. Alvarez gets the mount but Reynolds uses the cage as a fulcrum to push Alvarez out and Eddie salvages half guard. The round ends and WKR scores it 10-9 for Alvarez.

Round 2- Eddie eats a punch and appears dazed. Reynolds shoots but cant secure the takedown. Both fighters lean against the cage Alvarez has hold of a single leg and works it into a takedown. Alvarez takes Reynolds back but Eric works his way out. Alvarez secures a double leg and lands a big slam. Alvarez transitions to mount again and finally throws some punches from the dominant position. Reynolds eats more punches and bucks out of mount. Now Alvarez has Reynolds back as Eric rolls into guard. Eddie lets Reynolds up and then takes him back down straight to side control. Alvarez is going for an arm triangle and is outside of Reynolds guard. Ten seconds are left and Alverz lets it go favoring mount for the last seconds.

Round 3- Alvarez fakes a flying knee and lands a flush right hook to start the round. Alvarez then immediately takes Reynolds down. Eddie lifts up Reynolds and slams him to the mat much to the satisfaction of the crowd. Eddie takes Reynolds back and gets both legs in flattening out his opponent and securing the rear-naked choke. Reynolds taps and the fight is over.

Eddie Alvarez def. Eric Reynolds via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 3, 1:30. Eddie Alvarez advances to the finals of the Bellator lightweight tournament.

yeah…He could be a top HW prospect. He is built in the mold of Andrei Arlovksi. He needs to wok on his stand up and keep his hands up. Not to mention your observations on cardio
