Shake up at WAMMA. Is the organization near death?
The staff of the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts is experiencing another major shake up.
Temporary Chief Operating Officer, Sam Caplan, and Vice President of Fighter Relations, Pat Miletich, have both resigned their positions.
In their respective statements for leaving the organization, both individuals expressed serious concerns over the viability of WAMMA to complete its mission statement. However both Caplan and Miletich reaffirmed their belief in the goals and principles of the organization.
To the casual observer this appears to be the equivalent of rats jumping off a sinking ship (not that I am implying either men are rats, its just a saying).
Both Caplan and Miletich were founding members and held prominent positions within the organization. It is no secret that many within the MMA community view the organization as a joke but their intentions and goals are noble. For instance creating a fighter pension, fighter insurance and unified independent rankings.
Sam Caplan is the editor of FiveOuncesofPain.com the official partner of CBS Sportsline. Caplan originally held the chair position of the WAMMA's independent ranking commission. Caplan would take on the COO role after fellow founding member Michael Lynch resigned.
Pat Miletich is a former UFC champion and founder of the Miletich Fighting Systems. A MMA camp that once boasted several UFC champions.
Luke Thomas of BloodyElbow.com thinks that this latest development will usher in the demise of the organization. Part of that analysis is due to the existence of USA Today/ SB Nation's Consensus MMA Rankings which are generated by BloodyElbow. The partnership between USA Today and SBN may of cut the legs out from under WAMMA.

This org was over when it started.
Lets see, with their CEO Szady being a former FBI assistant director of counterintelligence and having no real background in MMA, along with Bill Goldberg (I’m trying not to laugh) as their vice pres. in charge of business developement. I mean, did they really expect any PROFITABLE and reputable promotion to take them seriously?

Profitabillity is an interesting question.
If they had been a non profit perhaps things could of worked out better.
Also if they had avoided having WAMMA champions and tried to make a partnership with the UFC for fighter pension/ fighter insurance things could’ve been different

Regardless of my feelings about WAMMA, I just wish that the MMA community as a whole would get together on some of the things WAMMA was trying to do, instead of kicking the failing organization while it’s down.

I think a UFC fighter guild should happen and hopefully will happen in the next 5-10 years.
I think the SAG would be a good model to follow.
