MMA Legislation faces date for critical vote

It was over a year ago that it seemed inevitable that MMA legislation in New York would get out of committee. Unfortunately for UFC and MMA fans that effort collapsed as certain politicians got cold feet.

In 2009 the New York Assembly once again took up the issue of MMA legislation. Now we have word  that the committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports will debate and vote on the MMA legislation on May 27th.

This is a great step towards legalization in the country's largest media market.

MMA fans still have plenty of reasons to be patient.

Even if the committee passes the bill it will still have to go to before the Assembly then the Senate before being signed into law by the governor. It is also noteworthy to remember that the legislative calendar in New York ends in early July. Unless the bill passes both Assembly and Senate by then it is highly unlikely it will be made into law in 2009.
