UFC 98 Recap and Results

1072

"Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the Machida era."

Joe Rogan's words have never rang more true. Lyoto Machida, an undefeated fight who has never lost a round in the UFC, became the new UFC light heavyweight champion with a second round TKO over 'Sugar' Rashad Evans.

The first round went according to the script that many feared. Evans refused to engage Machida as it took two full minutes before the first blow was landed. In the few early exchanges Machida had the upper hand, landing cleanly when he chose to throw punches or kicks. Once again it appeared that Rashad Evans was giving up an early rounds.

It didn't take as long for the fighters to engage in the second round but Evans was once again coming up short in the exchanges. Midway through the round Machida landed a combination that dazed the former champion. As Evans tried to recover Machida pushed forward landing more punches. The champion kept fighting on heart but was far from putting up an intelligent defense as Machida continued his onslaught. Machida finally connected with a left that sent Evans down in highlight reel fashion.

This was Rashad Evans first career loss.

The Hughes Serra grudge match finally came to fruition and it lived up the hype. Hughes was rocked early as he caught an accidental head butt from Serra. Serra tried to finish his dazed opponent but couldn't quite finish the fight in the first round.

The second round was vintage Matt Hughes as he took Matt Serra down and landed some effective punches. Leading into the final round the score cards were even with the winner of third round being the deciding factor. Hughes started the round much like he finished the second but Serra's effective guard caused referee, Steve Mazzagatti, to stand the fighters up with over a minute left. From there Serra tried to do enough to win the round but could only muster a takedown with thirty seconds left. It wasn't enough to sway the judges as all three scored it 29-28 for Hughes. Both fighters briefly embraced after the fight and little animosity was said in their post fight interviews.

Matt Hughes didn't comment regarding his rumored retirement but the former welterweight champion did not look up to caliber when compared to the current crop of top welterweights in the UFC. Matt Serra's future is in doubt as well. Joe Rogan posed the possibility of dropping weight to Serra but the visibly distraught former champion seemed less than excited about that possibility. Still for a fight that has long been brewing fans were treated to an entertaining affair.

Drew McFedries proved once again that he may have the heaviest hands in the middleweight division as he knocked out Xavier Foupa-Pokam in just thirty seven seconds.

Chael Sonnen may have taken the Dan Miller fight on short notice but it didn't stop the former WEC middleweight stand out from putting on a dominant performance. Sonnen only looked to be in danger early in the first round as he shot for a single leg. Miller was able to put Sonnen in a guillotine choke but Chael escaped. From there the next three rounds featured solid ground-and-pound from the Sonnen as he easily defeated the former IFL middleweight champion.

In the opening bout of the televised card Sean Sherk continued his recent trend of kickboxing against Frankie Edgar. Unfortunately for the 'Muscle Shark' Edgar was able to out box to a unanimous decision. Sherk now slips out of lightweight title contention and Frankie Edgar has become a legitimate contender.

Full results after the jump.
