Pacquiao vs. Hatton Hangover

Pacquiao_says_goodnight_medium

I know this is an MMA website but there were several things that happened in last night's fight that I wanted to talk about. Besides I wanted to use our new cool AP Photo feature but I can't seem to find a photo. Fear not the interwebs will provide one.

So here it goes: Some thoughts while I recover from my Pacquiao vs. Hatton hangover...

- Was this the biggest fight of the year? Without a doubt for boxing but when it comes to combat sports the jury is still out. UFC 100 has a real chance to beat whatever pay-per view numbers Pacquiao-Hatton does. On the other hand that card will sell based on depth not solely on the main event. The closest thing that could of compared to Pacquiao-Hatton was probably Penn-St. Pierre and unfortunately that fight didn't live up to the hype. Stupid Vaseline.

- Manny Pacquiao is fast, road runner fast. Now that I think about this fight could be summed up perfectly as the Road Runner vs. Wile E. Coyote. The Road Runner always wins.

- Fight was kind of short to analyze each fighters strategy's and tactics but I will try my best. Manny really good, Ricky not so much.

- Freddie Roach maintains his position as the dominant trainer in boxing. Now if only his MMA fighters could win...

- Something that people haven't mentioned yet, or at least I haven't read yet, is that boxing now only has one super fight left in Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao. Guess who just came out of retirement?

- For those curious what the Hatton fans were chanting check out the lyrics below

There's only one Ricky Hatton,
One Ricky Hatton,
Walking along,
Singing this song,
Walking in a Hatton wonderland.

- [UPDATE: Note by Zak Woods, 05/03/09 2:47 PM EDT ]
Just thought of something else. Boxing has been pretty succesful in setting up blockbuster bouts for the lighter weight classes that have garnered a lot of fanfare. Does this mean and end to the myth that casual fans need HW's to be interested in a fight? How does that reflect on the UFC with their stacked 170 division? Or how does the affect the UFC in a positive on having such a deep 205 division?

- Anything to add?

The only guy now that has a chance against Pacquiao is Mayweather, and even then, only on Floyd’s very best day. The guy is just phenomenal, I’ve never seen a fighter with such speed, skill and power.

I think Mayweather has a better chance at beating Pacman then you are giving him credit for. Jr. has great defense, fantastic head movement and he is a counter puncher. Now I don’t how effective Pacquiao’s speed would be at counter the above mentioned traits but I would love to see it.

I think the fight could easily do 2 million PPV buys but I am more interested in what happens after it with regards to what would be left over after such a match.
