Ben Saunders talks Mike Swick and his future in the welterweight division
Ultimate Fighter Six alum, Ben Saunders, is preparing to face his toughest opponent in Mike Swick at UFC 99.
Suanders recently talked to Fighthype about the upcoming fight and seems extremely confident about his abilities with little concern for Swick saying,
He needs to be worried about my blades. The clinch is only one aspect and not something I feel I have to get. People seem to think that because I used it so well in my last fight, that it's my bread and butter. I love the clinch and feel very confident there, but it is by no means my best and only form of attack. I am a striker at heart and believe I can stand and bang with the best of them.
Saunders is still living up his flashy victory over Brandon Wolff,
I keep hearing the Anderson Silva comparison and it's flattering and pretty funny. Then, of course you get critics saying Anderson only needed so and so many knees and I needed like forty to put my guy out, but I'm not Anderson Silva. I'm Ben Saunders and we aren't the same person and never will be.
Finally Saunders appears flushed with confidence that his position within the deep welterweight division will change for the better after UFC 99,
Well, since he [Swick] is not considered a top 10, but some might say he is a top 15 as a welterweight with his record and a win over Davis, I would hope a win over Swick moves me up the ladder to bigger names in the division. Becoming 4-0 in the UFC will have me begging Joe Silva for a Top 10 if I win in impressive fashion, which I believe is very possible.
While one has to admire a confident fighter there are several issues that need to be addressed. First the Consensus Rankings have Swick as the #9 ranked welterweight so Saunders is getting his top-ten opponent already. Saunders isn't in the top twenty-five so this does have the potential to be a big bout for him.
Personally Saunders is becoming an extremely overrated commodity due to one highlight reel performance. After all, this is an individual who lost to Tommy Spears (now out of the UFC in disgrace), couldn't find the heart to compete again in TUF 6 when a position opened up and got rocked by Dan Barrera in the first round of their TUF fight. Had Barrera not been an idiot Saunders could have been eliminated early on.Saunders did rebound to handily defeat Barrera in the TUF-6 finale and then went on to beat Ryan Thomas. Thomas is 0-2 in the UFC having also lost to Matt Brown.
Saunders most memorable fight --the one everyone cites as they fling themselves onto the bandwagon-- was his dismantling of Brandon Wolff at Fight for the Troops. Wolff was making his UFC debut at the time and is now 0-2 inside the UFC.
To recap Saunders is 3-0 in the UFC and his opponents have a grand record of 0-5 in the UFC. Now he is making a big jump in competition by facing Swick who is 8-1 in the UFC having only lost to Yushin Okami.
Saunders own arguments against Swick e.g. he won't have size and reach advantages, also apply to Saunders who has been the athletically superior fighter in all three of his UFC fights.
So while Saunders may be an extremely overrated commodity he has a chance to prove me wrong on June 13th.

I think I might be guilty of jumping on the Ben Saunders bandwagon. :) Having said that, I truly like the guy and I genuinely hope the guy gets the “W” at UFC 99. Nothing against Mike"Quick" Swick…
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

I like him too and was totally on the Saunders bandwagon until I read the interview and was like ‘wait a second none of what he is saying lines up with reality’.
