WKR exclusive interview with Spencer Fisher
This Monday Spencer Fisher took his camp to Cologne, Germany. Before he left he took some time to answer a few of WKR's questions.
WatcKalibRun: How do you feel about the prospect of fighting on the UFC's first German card?
Spencer Fisher: I am excited about it.
WKR: Are you excited about being a pioneer in a new country for MMA?
Spencer Fisher: Nah, I just enjoy fighting for the UFC. It's my lifelong dream I like getting paid for beating people up
WKR: German officials recently banned minors from attending the event. Do you have any thoughts about that legislative intrusion?
Spencer Fisher: No that's the first I ever heard of that. I am surprised about that. I don't have any comment on that. It's a different country and that's the rules and regulation then that's the rules and regulation so I am okay with it.
WKR: Have you been doing anything specific to prepare for Caol Uno?
Spencer Fisher: No I have not, nothing different from what I normally do. Just trying to get in shape that's it really.
WKR: Have you seen anything specific in Uno's game to attack?
Spencer Fisher: Yeah I want to hit him in the face really hard.
WKR: So to use a football term you are going into this fight with your base offense, no tricks or anything.
Spencer Fisher: I'll save that for the fight.
WKR: Do you think that Uno has any particular weakness or soft spot that you can exploit?
Spencer Fisher: Well his chin seems to be suspect and I am saying that out in the open. I don't think he will stand with me very long. I think he will revert to try and take me down and I am going to try and catch him with a knee on the way in and I am going try and knock him out that's my plan I think his chin is suspect and that's what I am going to try and exploit.
WKR: In watching the tape, Caol he like's to try and ‘bum rush' in the early rounds are you taking any steps to prepare for that?
Spencer Fisher: Yeah, I got a couple of guys trying to emulate him so I am going to try and catch him coming in trying to work on my footwork a lot I am sure he will try a single leg, he likes the single leg, so I am going to try and feed him a knee on the way in.
WKR: Caol has been out of the UFC for six years now and he had been gone for two years when you entered the organization. Was there any legacy holdover, were you aware of him?
Spencer Fisher: I am a huge fan of Caol Uno's I am a big, big fan I have seen him fight he's a southpaw shows lots of heart he's not predictable he fights a lot like I do and I can imagine he's a crafty veteran and I am excited to knock him out it will be a great victory for me.
WKR: Where do you see yourself in the lightweight divisional picture?
Spencer Fisher: I am right in the mix of it. I am probably the best stand up fighter in the lightweight division full of wrestlers so its kind of shaky ground for me knowing that no one usually finishes me. The wrestlers lay on me for three rounds no one wants to see that. All you wrestlers, I don't know, I don't mind if you take me down just try and finish me when we are on the ground. Don't lay on me no one wants to see a blanket. I know that sounds kind of arrogant and I should try and stop the takedown but jeez laweez come on, look to finish the fight, that's boring. You don't see me try to jab somebody and run from somebody. I go and try to knock their head off. They should try to do the same thing take me down finish me.
WKR: Your jab comment was that a reference to Frankie Edgar?
Spencer Fisher: Yeah you know, it's not just a reference to him [Frankie Edgar] it's to all wrestlers you know. If you are going to fight me and you are going to take me down, I am not saying don't take me down cause that's your job, that's what your good at, but don't lay on top of me in my guard and not do anything. That's ridiculous. I get up and walk out with not a scratch on me that's ridiculous, come on. And I bleed if you look at me the wrong way so it's not hard you know what I mean come on let's fight.
WKR: Is there anything you'd like see referees do to avoid that lay-n-pray style stalemate?
Spencer Fisher: That body-body-head stuff and I referee shows I tell everybody I am going stand you guys up, no one wants to see body-body-head. that's 1994 stuff. We are past that, the sport has evolved and so have we as fighters and the fans are more educated now. They know what they are looking at. They should be looking for people doing damage and if not, stand it up.
WKR: See I think that's an interesting point because if eel that I one of the thing's that is facing MMA right now because We aren't rewarding successful defense as much as we should be.
Spencer Fisher: Or submission attempts and counters. The fans are all educated with the sport now they understand what they are looking at. No one wants to see two guys laying on each other it's ridiculous.
WKR: It's interesting you brought up submissions attempts. A lot of fighters are almost worried about sacrificing dominant position to go for positions....
Spencer Fisher: Position for submission exactly.
WKR: ...that there should be some kind of reward for fighter's who make that sacrifice
Spencer Fisher: Absolutely.
WKR: I write for SBN and we provide USA Today's MMA rankings I have figured I would give you a chance to respond to where we have you positioned. Currently within the UFC you would be ranked as the 12th lightweight in the UFC and Caol as the 10th. Do you feel that is an accurate representation?
Spencer Fisher: I don't care. I really don't care one way or the other.
WKR: I know you are a former Miletich Fighting Systems fighter and Drew McFedries made some comments that a lot of people were confused about regarding the Miletich Fighting Systems. And Miletich came out with some forceful comments
Spencer Fisher: No I am not too sure what happened.
WKR: Because there has been a back and forth between Miletich and McFedries.
Spencer Fisher: Yeah but I don't know what is true and what's not true. I hear a lot of different things. Yeah, I don't know a 100% on any of that stuff. So I can't comment on any of that.
WKR: Who would you like to fight next in the lightweight division?
Spencer Fisher: I'd love to fight Cole Miller or Hermes Franca.
WKR: Any reason why you mentioned Cole Miller?
Spencer Fisher: Yeah, because he called me out on the last show that he fought on. And no offense to any of the guys Cole ahs fought in the past but I could beat all his last opponents in the same night, in one night. He called me out and I think it is kind of disrespectful, I have nothing against the guy but I could fairly handle him. As far has Hermes goes he beat me before and that's a fight I would like to get back.
WKR: Thanks for your time and good luck on Saturday.
